Corsair H55 done for? Should I send it back?

I've been having problems with my PC making a grinding noise under anything other than very light load (browsing/email) - it's a quite powerful rig 'n all. If I go into the BIOS the noise is horrendous. The CPU temperature is at 60 degrees, but falls rapidly to 40 and the noise stops. If I set the CPU fan to full, the noise and overheating return. I spoke to the guys I bought it from (CyberPower); they asked me to check if the noise stops if I detach the pump from the motherboard - it did. They said the pump was done for and to return it. I also told them that the 'physical' fan that comes with the H55 isn't spinning - like not one tiny jot - nada. This didn't alter their diagnosis. I'm happy to return it, but I just wonder why the fan never spins. Perhaps I'm being really think and stupid, but I wonder if anyone could confirm that the fan not spinning is symptomatic of the pump being broken. What would be 'normal' behaviour for this fan?

Not sure this is the right way to update this (i.e. by 'answering' my own question) but I think it would be confusing to update at the top of a chain. The connection for the fan that is attached to the pump loops round the back of the motherboard. It is plugged into an extension that is bundled together and tied with another couple of wires. These bundled wires stretch the length of the case and into an enclosure at the top/front which contains the power button and fan controls. The corresponding light for the back fan is not illuminated (it never was from day one). Where would I plug it in on the motherboard? It can't do any less than it's doing now, but I don't want to plug it in the wrong place.

I guess I don't understand why this fan is wired into the manual 'slider' fan mechanism, when the mechanism was never enabled to manually change the speed of this fan (it does so for the left side and top fans - works a treat). There are 3 cpu header slots on the mother board in close proximity. The pump is plugged into one of them. Could I do any harm by trying to plug the physical fan into either of the other 2?
