Thoughts on 1060 vs 480.

My current rig is an i3 6100, 8GB 2400MHz RAM, Z170A Pro from MSI and a CX500M 80+ Bronze PSU. Notice i don't have a GPU. Keep that in mind.

So obviously the thread is about which one to buy. I'm leaning on the 480 because it is slightly cheaper and i don't have a gpu right now, so either one will be a huge upgrade. My main question is: Do you think it is a good idea for me personally to go with the 480. Secondary question, do you think i will be hurting myself, if i plan to get 2-3 years on the 480, if i go with the 4GB version instead of the 8GB version to save a little bit more money.

Update: I don't plan on upgrading my setup in the near future since I'm planning a move halfway across the US. Currently i have a 1080 TV that serves as my monitor. If i were to get a new/another monitor, it would most likely be a 1080.

Get the gtx 1060. its about the same as an rx 480 8gb exept it has 6gb of gddr5 ram. Its vr ready and its directX 12. The gtx 1060 beats the rx 480 it pretty much every category. Get the gtx 1060. But if you plan to do alot of gaming. get a better cpu. If you want some thing around $200 get an intel core i5 6500

Woah woah woah, one step at a time, lol. I have plans on upgrading my cpu in the future, but as i mentioned with the planned move my expenses are a bit... budgeted. Depending on several factors i might even go with an i7 to make sure it lasts years. Thanks though. xD

With another monitor in the mix in the future and budget in mind, I'd definitely look towards the RX 480. With the ability to get lower-priced adaptive sync monitors:

http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/technologies-gaming/freesync

And that you could, with the RX 480, add a second one (CrossFire) with the motherboard you have, I think it offers the most long-term potential...keeping options open. With that in mind though, the 8gb version may be better to consider.....but would have no problem finding a playable setting with the 4gb version for a long time to come either.

All good points. I mean upgrading from integrated graphics, I'll be happy with whatever i choose, but for my situation specifically i think the 480 will definitely be the better choice in the long run. Now I'm just waiting on those board partners to kick it into high gear and actually get us some options. >=(
