Like on pcpartpicker it tells me "Some Intel B85 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Haswell Refresh CPUs."

in compatibility notes.

What is the BIOS update?
As with any software, your computer or motherboard manufacturer periodically updates the BIOS to fix bugs, add compatibility with new devices such as new CPU models, improve caching functions, and make several other hardware tweaks that can speed up your boot time and fix annoying issues.

As far as the pcpartspicker warning goes, that is a fairly old warning. It may no longer be the case that you need a BIOS update for new CPUs.

The Basic Input/Output System or BIOS is a chip on the motherboard that governs the hardware. the BIOS update is needed because the motherboard was made before the Haswell chips were available. when they were released the BIOS software was updated to allow support of the series.
download the update and flash it to the system. according to the manufacturers instructions
Flashing is the process of rewriting an EEPROM- Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory- that holds the BIOS software.

Basically the bios, or bios firmware.

Is a bit of coded software that can be stored on a bios chip of the motherboard you buy.

It controls or contains a software program that tells all of the hardware of the motherboard like the chip set how to work.
And also any add in hardware you connect to the motherboard, for example a Pci-e graphics card fitted to the Pci-e card slot of the motherboard Newbie.

A bios firmware update is just an added improvement so the board functions and works with the components of the motherboard and controls things, and also any other bit of hardware connected to the motherboard via the provided ports or slots on the motherboard.
