HD Tune Shows CRC Error on Seagate Drive

Recently, I had a slew of PC problems that went from extreme slowness to erratic behavior to dead. I ended up replacing my motherboard, case, CPU, memory and hard drive. My system now runs fine (under Win 7).

I was warned along the way that my old hard drive, a Seagate Barracuda ST3500641AS [500GB], was having issues, but it didn’t appear so. I hooked it up to my new setup though an external case connected by a USB cable and it worked fine. To play safe, I reformatted the drive. It’s now empty. I also replaced the USB cable.

I tested the drive with HD Tune. I got the following result:
-----
(C7) Interface CRC Error Count
Current Worst Threshold Data Status
200 200 0 7 attention
-----

Before I start using it again, I was concerned by this message. What does it mean? Is it a serious issue? Can it be fixed?

Check out this thread (there are a few): http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2251969/interface-crc-error-count.html

Also I would use the manufacturer Seatools to run a shot and full scan on the disk. You may never see a problem, but monitor for an increase in error count. This is a communication error not just an error indicative of hard drive failure. The problems may have occurred on your old system, or might have occurred on your USB enclosure, hard to tell without lots of scan results.

Hey there, @johnbil!

I'd advise you to test your HDD again using its manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic utility, just like @01111111 suggested. However, make sure you backup all your data from the drive regularly, especially if there are attention marks in the SMART attribute results. This is the best way to avoid potential data loss. It would also be really helpful to see the full SMART results from your previous test as well.
This particular parameter indicates that there is some sort of miscommunication between the drive and the southbridge (host). The raw value here indicates the number of errors found during a data transfer. You might want to connect the HDD via SATA and test it again to see what the results will show then.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted.
