I have a new install of Win 7 Sp1 and it cannot update. It appears that it cannot access the internet. hangs at Checking for updates. I left it on overnight, Firefox and Explorer can access. The troubleshooting tool hangs also trying to access the net. I did that with AVG off.

The history here is that I have spent a week trying to make Update work on my carefully set up Win 7 setup without success. I tried all of the windows suggestions. I ran Malwarebytes, Kaspersky, I ran Avira, then AVG. I decided to endure the aggravation of a clean install. Still no connection!. What can I do now. It should be simple now that the system has been cleared. I would be grateful for any help you can provide!

PS Seagate dashboard (backup) Hangs also when installing. I think it is failing to update also.

Are you sure it's actually hung? MS updates for win 7 has been having issues. If you force it to check for updates it can takes 5+ hours to find the updates. Your better off turning on automatic updates and just let it do it's thing. Some claim these unrelated patches (in links below) will fix it.

Yes. I gave it 10 hours last night. I downloaded those updated but the Windows Standalone Updater has been running for an hour and does not seem to be working! It says searching for updates. Something in the update software is not working and is affecting them both. This is a new install. I downloaded it from microsoft so I thought it would have what I needed! Frustrating.

Is there a way to pull all of the updates off of my laptop and transfer them to this PC?

Yeah, that is what it does. It will say searching for updates, and then a long wait. Most times I'll let mine go overnight. Some have said it's microsoft's way of forcing you to upgrade to windows 10. I haven't tried installing the updates listed in those links yet. If you google "windows 7 long updates", you will see that many users are in the same boat.

So many of us, yes. I almost gave up and sent to 10 but 10 isn't free anymore. Happy for that. Seems like every Microsoft tool fails to work too. Fixit won't fully load. Standalone installer hangs in the same place. This happened right after a update package that came in March. Mt laptop and desktop stopped updating at the same time. Luckily the laptop was reset-able. This desktop was not. Even if I get this fixed there is still the fact that it will take a month to get back to where I had it. Callous cruelty from a big company that doesn't care. I am back to trying everything and hoping someone here has a good suggestion.
