I have an MSI z97 motherboard and i have been using 1x8gb stick for my first few months but recently ordered the exact same stick so I can have dual channel ram. Now when I go to install it (in slots 2 and 4 like it says on the mobo) my PC doesn't turn on (lights on GPU, fans etc turn on tho. Then if I try just launching with just 1 of the sticks it works (tried the new one alone, it works, I've tried all combinations of slots aswell. I also enabled XMP which didn't help, and I've taken on that CMOS battery for 30 secs. Any help is appreciated

Ram is sold in kits for a reason.
A motherboard must manage all the ram using the same specs of voltage, cas and speed.
Ram from the same vendor and part number can be made up of differing manufacturing components over time.
Some motherboards can be very sensitive to this.

You can try giving the ram a bit more voltage; sometimes that helps.

Hey thanks for the reply, so I retired putting them in slots 1/2 and it worked but was not running dual channel. I tried dual channel and I'm having the same porblem again (not turning on but all lights and fans on)

Strange, I had a similar problem.
My friend had a i5-4670K which was working but would only work with one stick.
We tested each stick and it would work, but not two together.
Thinking it was the motherboard, we tested the cpu in another motherboard and it exhibited the same problem.
We put a different cpu in the original motherboard and all was well.
That confirmed that the cpu was at issue.
It was rma'ed to intel under warranty(barely) and the replacement worked perfectly.
It turned out that the cpu was defective in trying to initialize dual channel. It happens but is rare.

I wonder if there is some sort of a weakness in that chip.
