I am having a problem with Windows 10 and my RAM. If I go into my control panel and look at my system specs, it shows me having 8.00 GB of Installed Memory (RAM). I have 24 GB installed -- two sticks of 4, and two sticks of 8. I used to run 12 GB, two sticks of 4 and two of 2, and this correctly displayed me running at 12GB -- those were leftover sticks from my old computer.
If I go into the Task Manager, and click on the performance tab, the Memory block says I'm currently running 2.1/7.9 GB of RAM. I have one tab of Chrome open, task manager, and Norton idling in the background. It also tells me I'm using only 2 of my 4 slots, and two of my slots add up to 8GB
So here's where it gets complicated for me: In my BIOS (I have a MSI mobo) I can do a thing where it shows my "virtual motherboard" -- I can mouse over the ram slots and it registers them being filled, it correctly registers the brand, and the quantity. I can open the Speccy program, and it shows 24 GB of RAM, and it shows the 4 memory slots being used. I'll attach a screenshot. It says that I have Memory usage of 27%... which is what the Task Manager says, but it says I have 8 GB. Speccy says more about physical and virtual Memory -- The physical and virtual values add up to 24, but I don't understand what this is or what it means for me.
Even furthermore, if I run CPU-Z, it correctly shows me running 24576 Mbytes of DDR3 RAM which is correct.
Why do Task Manager and System Specs report me only having 8 GB of RAM, but analyzing programs and my bios correctly show I have 24? Is Windows not detecting (and therefore not using) that RAM? Is this a W10 glitch?
I've seen other things about disabling automatic paging file managing and things through advanced system properties, but I know nothing about this or what it means for me. Im just worried the 24 GB of RAM I bought isn't all being used.
One final note, I don't seem to ever like, run out of RAM... I'm able to play games while streaming via OBS and having discord open.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
