I'm trying to confirm that the speeds I'm seeing are normal. On the 5GHz band (802.11AC), regardless of distance I'm seeing 20 MB/s write and 30 MB/s read off of a WD My Book USB 3.0 hard drive (hooked up to USB 3.0 port). Read/Write speeds of drive hooked up to laptop directly are on the order of 130 MB/s and 75 MB/s, respectively. I'd even be interested to hear how my values compare to what people are getting with similar competitor routers (e.g. Netgear, Asus, etc.). Performance seems a bit low to me but I'm no expert. Thanks.

If you go look at the testing sites for 802.11ac routers you will find most are getting in the 200mbit/sec average rates. This is pretty close to what you are getting. The wireless number the manufacture claim are some magic number that can only be achieved in a lab setting. They are doing stuff like adding transmit and receive speed together even though wireless can not actually send and receive the same instant.

You should get better results using ethernet cables but you will find many routers will limit your speed. The NAS function in the router is just another feature to be used to compare to other routers. Actual dedicated NAS equipment tends to be able to transfer at faster rates....then again there is some really cheap nas being sold that is no better.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been researching NAS and this router definitely seems designed to use for NAS (there's enough ports on the back). I just wanted to try out the external hard drive function. I'll keep looking into upgrading it with a NAS of decent capacity. As you alluded to "you get what you pay for"...so look for a reputable NAS if speed is the goal.
