Hi, my friend just got a GTX 1070 and we've been noticing something peculiar. Whenever he's playing overwatch we notice that his CPU usage stays at 100% the entire time. This causes his music that he's listening to on iTunes in the background to lag, which is super annoying.

He has a 1080p 144hz monitor and has an obsession with playing every game at 144fps, so I was wondering if it's creating a bottleneck because the cpu can't keep up with that high of fps? Just wondering what you guys thought, Thanks!

Also the 4670k is at stock clockspeeds (he's using the stock cooler) and he has 16gb of ram so I don't think that's it either.

Solution
144fps is a very high target for any CPU in most games. It does sound like your friend is CPU-limited, but if he were to cap his framerate lower (perhaps at 100-120fps) this would likely solve the problem with iTunes.

Moving up to an i7 4790K is an option, as is overclocking the CPU he already has, but he would be looking at ~15% improved single-threaded performance tops. There's really not much better than what he has; all existing CPUs are going to struggle to hit 144fps.

My I5 4670K @ 4.2GHZ is at 100% Usage across all the cores while playing GTA V and Battlefield 1 and I only have a MSI R9 390, what I find strange is up until a month or so ago my i5 4670K never went higher than 80% on average when playing GTA V (cant say for BF1 as it came out after my issue started) so I am curious as if a Windows update has caused an issue (Windows 10) I've tried everything I can think off other than reinstalling Windows (Which I think I am going to do just to make sure) so if you guys have found a solution or what was causing the issue id appreciate it if you would let me know, thanks. I just don't want to admit that my I5 is starting to struggle as she has been flawless up until this point.

I just reset my PC and reinstalled everything from scratch but the issue still persists, the only way i can seem to keep the CPU Usage under 100% in GTA V is by increasing the render resolution to 1.500 in the "Advance Settings" tab in GTA V as well as enabling Vsync (Usually keeps the Usage in the 70-90% range) while in BF1 I had to increase the render resolution scale to 125% to get the CPU Usage to drop to the 80-90% range while keeping the FPS above 60 most of the time.
