A Relatively Rare Issue (I think)

So here's the problem:

Sometimes, seemingly at random, but usually after an update to the game (WoWs) or to the OS (Win10) my in-game FPS will drop about %80 (across all games).

After much tweaking and playing with the core speeds, GPU settings, power settings (it's a laptop) and even BIOS settings, all to non-effect. One day it will start working normally as randomly as it stopped working.

However not all is lost I think, because I've realised something that might hold the clue to the solving of the problem:

When the game is launched with the Nvidia GPU the CPU clock speed wil drop; from 2.4GHz at max performance to between 2.0GHz - 1.2GHz.
However when launched with the onboard Intel 4000 GPU this decrease in CPU performance won't happen. Resulting in a crisp and smooth performance with a worse GPU.

And before you mention it; no it's not CPU throttling and no, my temps are within normal operational range (I mean except the Nvidia GPU which runs at 92 Celsius when under load, but that's been the case since day one... it's a laptop.)

Nvidia support just suggested I remove the driver with DDU and then do a clean install in safe-mode of the driver version 355.60 (because it's the latest one that can be installed in safe-mode) and do a normal install of the latest driver in normal mode.
Which, I have to say, I can't see the point of.

So, there it is. I'm open to all explanations and possible solutions.
Thanks in advance.

How do I go about it then?

The ones I've seen and tried are all asking for payment to update, I'd rather not do that.
