i accidently plugged justa 4 pin into an 8 pin 12v rail for my processor and i smelt a burnign smell i fried the psu so i tried mine with an 8 pin adapter and i still smelt burnign off processor i took processor in turned computer on again and no burnign smell is the processor just burnt out from the power surge of not having an 8 pin on the first boot up

Bad CPU then. You'll need a new one. I'm still not sure how you fried it. Plugging in half of the 8pin shouldn't cause any damage. I did it with my setup to see if it would power on. As I mentioned above it didn't work. But I didn't fry anything in the attempt.

In another thread with a similar problem the OP just came back and said replacing the PSU and board didn't fix the problem. You might need to send this to a shop to have them test the parts and see what if anything is broken. Will make buying replacement parts a lot easier.

Which 4 pin? There is the main ATX bundle which is often a 20+4 instead of a straight 24pin. If you plugged that 4pin into the 8pin plug on the motherboard then you blew the PSU and most likely the mobo as well. If you plugged in the 24 (or 20+4) into the motherboard and had only the proper 4pin left over it should have fit into the 8pin plug just fine.

You mentioned using an adapter of which the most common isn't for the board but for the GPU. That 8pin plug would not have fit easily into the board. In short I'm trying to figure out what you put where. Photos or better descriptions of what you did is needed.

i got the 24 pin in the 24 pin slot that psu had a 20 pin with the 4 pin adapter and than i had a 6 pin and 4 pin left over so i put the 4 pin in the 12 volt which i assumed was the processor power and the adapter was just my two 4 pins taht connect to an 8 pin by clicking i dont know why this is marked as siolved

6pin is 2x3pins? 4pin is 2x2pins? That should have fit into half of the 8pin on the board. You said the adapter was "my two 4 pins taht connect to an 8 pin by clicking". That sounds like the 4+4 pin plug found on modern PSUs. But that shouldn't be an adapter, that should be found on your PSU.

So you got the first plug shown into the board as the 24pin plug right? What 4 pin did you plug in next? If you plugged in half of that 8pin (CPU1) on the board that should have caused no damage. Some boards will even turn on. (Mine don't, I need to have the entire 8pin plugged in.) None of this should have caused a burning smell. Try it with a different PSU, does it power up? You mentioned a burning smell with the CPU, was it seated correctly? Something under the CPU?

It was seated proprrly but if I take the processor out ad turn it on I no longer smell the burning smell

Holy crap, what an adventure...well then. At least you've got a desktop for now. I remember when I was messing around with LGA 775 boards trying to make a good gaming computer out of them and burned out 3 motherboards before realizing the raisers were in the wrong spots. 12 year old me was NOT smart, lmao

Anyways, I wish you luck! What temporary processor did you put in for now, and what graphics card did you have to RMA? I'm just curious.

Ah, okay. One little hint about finding the CPU and GPU models, you can find them listed in Device Manager normally. Easiest way to find Device Manager is the search bar, and in this case the CPU would be under the category Processors.
