Can I use a GTX 1070 fine with these other components? Concerned about old~ish CPU.

Hello everyone :)

I was wondering if I can run a GTX 1070 with these other components... here's my current build:

  • CPU: AMD FX-4100 (mainly concerned about this guy here)
    RAM: 8GB (2 x 4GB)
Motherboard: ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0 (it has the slot, should work afaik)
PSU: Thermaltake TOUGHPOWER 650W 80 PLUS GOLD (according to my research, this PSU should suffice)
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7770 (I'd be replacing this with the GTX 1070)
Now, by "run", I mean... will I get a minimum of stable 60 FPS @ 1080p? I know this probably depends on what kind of games one plays, so here's a list:

  • Overwatch (main game I play most of the time)
    Far Cry 4
    The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
    League of Legends
Now this would be at max settings, of course... otherwise what would be the point of getting such a powerful GPU card? hahaha

Solution
Your options are either to upgrade to a new platform with an i5 6xxx depending on if you're overclocking, or getting an FX 8350 if cash is tight. I highly recommend the i5 path though.

Agreed. Even a GTX 1060 will see a bottleneck with that CPU. The GTX 1060 is also sufficient for those titles maxed at 60Hz 1080p. The GTX 1070 would be better for 144Hz 1080p or 60Hz 1440p. But it would need a better CPU.

Thank you so much for the information! It seems like I'll need to do a whole new build for that high performance GPU... Oh boy, that's expensive, but I want the sweet graphics so that's the price for that I guess, haha. I've thought about switching to an Intel CPU setup for a while now, so...

I'm accepting Chugalug_'s answer since it also gives me a hint about where to go on from here (i5 6xxx), but I do appreciate all the answers/insight.

Here is an example of what I recommend.
Feel free to get a single 8GB stick of RAM and upgrade to 16 in the future if you don't have the cash.

Hey, thanks! Though I think I'll be going with the following setup... I have some of these components, except for the case, MOBO, CPU, RAM and GPU.

Maybe I'll start by getting the CPU, MOBO and RAM, while using my current Radeon HD 7770 GPU for now, until I can buy the GTX 1070 separately. :p

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor (pending)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (have it)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (pending)
Memory: Kingston 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory (pending)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (have it)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 1070 8GB Video Card (pending)

Turbo frequency on the 6500 is 3.6GHz versus 3.9GHz on the 6600, isn't that important?

I mean, assuming that "activating Turbo" is a simple and safe procedure... I'm not really familiar with Intel, had to read a lot these last few hours, haha.
