Okay, I have posted here before and got some good feedback so I thought I'd try again.

I would like to either purchase the GTX 1060 or GTX 1070, but I am currently running a FX6300 clocked at 4.3. My question is would it handle it? I purchased an EVGA GTX 960 2GB SSC and there just wasn't a big enough difference from my ASUS GTX 770 OC 2GB for me to have made the jump. Don't get me wrong, I do see a slight increase, but again not enough to justify the purchase. So here I am, $160 later and I want something better. If I need to upgrade my CPU I can, but only if I absolutely have to.

This is what I have in my pc:

-Corsair Graphite Black Steel ATX Full Tower 780T ,Full Tower PC Case ATX Black\RED LED FAN

-AMD FX-6300 Vishera 6-Core 3.5 GHz (4.1 GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+Processor

-ASRock ASRock Fatal1ty Gaming Fatal1ty 990FX Killer AM3+/AM3 AMD 990FX + AMD SB950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Gaming Motherboard

-16GB G.SKILL Ripjaws 1600 Gaming Series ram (2 x 8GB) Red

-EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2GB DDR5 SSC GAMING ACX 2.0+

-1TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive Storage - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s

-ZALMAN CNPS11X Performa 120mm Long Life Bearing V-Shaped Dual Heat Sink CPU Cooler

-Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750 750W ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE

-Corsair Corsair Air Series AF140 LED Quiet Edition High Airflow Fan - Red - CableMod WideBeam LED Bar

I would buy in two stages.
1. Buy a GTX1060. It is a very strong card and probably a bit overkill for 1080P gaming.
See how you do.

2. Then, try to find out if YOUR games need many cores like multiplayer games.
Perhaps a FX-8350 will be good.
Or, if you need faster cores where Intel will prevail.
The i3-6100 @$125 is one heck of a good mid range gamer.
You will always have the option to upgrade with the same lga1151 motherboard even up to a I7-6700K.

If i3-6100 is not good enough, I think the next step is a $225 i5-6600K which is as good as it gets with an overclock.
I would bypass the other I5 solutions that are in the $180-$200 range, The 6600K is just too good for the price differential.
Depending on the game, I suspect that your FX-6300 will be the limiting factor.
Here are a few tests to see if a graphics upgrade is likely to be of benefit:
------------------------------------------------------------
To help clarify your CPU/GPU options, run these two tests:

a) Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

b) Limit your cpu, either by reducing the OC, or, in windows power management, limit the maximum cpu% to something like 70%.
Go to control panel/power options/change plan settings/change advanced power settings/processor power management/maximum processor state/
This will simulate what a lack of cpu power will do.
Conversely what a 30% improvement in core speed might do.

You should also experiment with removing one core. You can do this in the windows msconfig boot advanced options option. You will need to reboot for the change to take effect. Set the number of processors to less than you have.
This will tell you how sensitive your games are to the benefits of many cores.

If your FPS drops significantly, it is an indicator that your cpu is the limiting factor, and a cpu upgrade is in order.

It is possible that both tests are positive, indicating that you have a well balanced system, and both cpu and gpu need to be upgraded to get better gaming FPS.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Buy in haste, repent at leisure.
Go ahead and buy a good monitor, but wait on the other decisions until you know more about what you need.

AMD and Nvidia graphics cards are competitive at every price point.
Take your pick there.

OTOH, amd processors are not competitive with today's Intel chips at anything above entry level.
Your FX-6300 has a passmark rating of 6344. That is when all 6 cores can be fully utilized.
Unfortunately, most games can use only 2-3 threads affectively.
Many games are dependent on the performance of the single master core.
For that, the single thread passmark rating is 1408.
If you would upgrade to a FX-8350, you would get a total rating of 8949 because of the two extra cores which you will not use, but your single thread rating would only modestly improve to 1505.

Even of you were to buy a FX-9590 your single thread rating would only be 1722.

FWIW, a mid range intel i3-6100 has a passmark rating of 5500 and a single thread rating of 2102.

Do not guess, use the tests I outlined before to find out what you really need.

so, basically what you are saying is that a mid range intel i3-6100 with a ten series card would work a lot better than my current set up?

say I wanted to get a mid ranged intel Core i3 6100 w/ a new MSI B150I GAMING PRO AC with a GTX 1060.

Is this more likely to work better? With those listed, I can purchase all of that tonight. I just want to play my games for the reason that I bought a pc in the first game.

******edit scratch that. I have $600 total I can spend. What would you do if you were in my shoes? Keep in mind a 1060 though lol. You seem pretty knowledgeable!

Thank you for all of your help. I will do just this. I will see how it works with my current games. Games I play most are doom, bf4 and gta 5(this will be the test!)

You have been very informative!

I'm sure I will be back in a few months. I am definitely considering the i5-6600K now that you brought that up. It is pretty reasonably priced. Now to research Mobos.

Have a great rest of your day

Okay need some help. Not sure what happened. Uninstalled previous drivers swapped out cards booted it up installed new drivers and was playing doom and all of the sudden my pc fans kicked on super hard and screen went black. I panicked and shut the computer off. Opened the case and noticed I didn't have the pci-e 2pin snapped in all of the way. I snapped it in and I am still having the issue. Any idea? I can boot it up get to my start screen but then the fans kick on again and it shuts down.

Bought Asus GTX 1060 Strix edition

Fixed it. Didn't have it plugged in all of the way like an idiot. So far so good. Doom on ultra with nightmare settings 70-110 fps. Gta 5 60-80fps. Thanks for all of your help everyone. Looks like the fx 6300 is still hanging in there.

Good to hear! I miss my AMD rig for...reasons, Zen is looking somewhat promising so who knows :)
