Hey guys! I'm getting a new processor for my computer (AMD FX 9370 )but i'm not really sure if it will work properly, could you guys help me find out if i need anything else like a cooler or something?

My specs:

  • GIGABYTE GA-78LMT-S2P
    AMD FX-6100
    GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 760
    2x 8GB Ram Corsair
    550W Power supply

It seems like my cpu runs pretty hot when im playing games, above 65C, 40 - 50 when im not in games, i just wanted to know if i need a new cooler, and what cooler i should get. And i don't actually know what my cooler is and how to find out.

You do not have a sufficient motherboard or power supply to run that processor.
Do not buy the FX 9xxx series. They are a horrible line of processors, draw way too much power, produce too much heat, and do not offer great performance.

If you are looking for an upgrade, make the switch to intel.

why isnt my motherboard sufficient? and my power supply? can you explain? i want to get a new cpu whitout switching my motherboard, i would go intel if i could. How about the AMD FX 8320E?

The motherboard does not support 220w processors, it does not have the proper power delivery in place, and the VRMs would likely catch fire.
The power supply is not large enough again because of the 220w processor plus the rest of the system.

You could upgrade to the 8320e, its not the best processor but its a far better pairing than an FX 9 series processor.
Do note, the official motherboard support list does not list anything above an 8300 as compatible.

would i need a new power supply if i got that 4590?

not really true

http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2122665/understanding-temperature-amd-cpus-apus.html

You must check your thermal margins.

Thermal margin is the only real way to determine if your under the cpu max temp-internal die temp. as long as it is a number greater then zero then the amd die is not over temp.

read the data sheet. This is the only temperature reference that amd has in there data sheets (seems amd didn't want to say what there max die temp really is).

read that very first picture which is from the amd cpu data sheet for fx cpus(you can get it from the amd site if you like and read even more) - as long as that is a positive number the cpu is dies is within safe temp range even if your system is reading a socket temp of 90c your die is still in safe range.

if you actually read amd didn't publish a max safe temp because amd does not actually allow a direct reading of the cpu die temp but actually this abnormal value we call "thermal margin" the socket temp of 62 was kind of set later on when people wanted to know a value for the socket temp as that is what most hardware monitors read so amd had to make up a number but it was never intended to be the way to read fx temp. (the socket temp is not even accurate measurement as that little sensor sits under the cpu and does not touch the cpu itself). but because every motherboard has the socket sensor slightly different location it can very how good of a reading it really is.

the only accurate way to know if your cpu is in its safe zone is to check its thermal margin. you can have a socket temp of only 45c and yet your die is overheating. just because that sensor is not an actually cpu die or even the cpu package temp but just a sensor under the cpu. that 62c value is not actually in the data sheets. so if you really believe that 140F is a risk for any IC then keep believing the lie.

Skully172 if you want to know if your cpu is overheating check your thermal margin using amd overdrive. if its a positive number then your cpu is safe temp. if its really close to 0 or a negative number then your overheating

Ok you helped me man! The whole topic changed but you still helped

im going to buy: mATX H81M-A/BR, Intel Core i5-4590 and a 1TB HardDrive
so my specs will be:

mATX H81M-A/BR
Intel Core i5-4590
GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 760
2x 8GB Ram Corsair
550W Power supply

and it seems i wont need a new power supply, at least i think i dont. I went on this website called outervision to look at the power supply calculator and it said my computer would consume 373 W or less

i was just wondering, is the 4690 too diferent from the 4590?
