Hi! My question is that shuold i buy a new fx prosessor like 8350 or 6350 or buy a new motherboard (Used motherboard) and overclock my current (fx-8120) im scared to overclock on my current mobo because its really not for overclocking :pt1cable: (Asus M5a78l le) btw if im gonna overclock this will be my first time ever :p

My other specs:
PSU: Corsair 500w
Ram: 12gb 1333mhz
Gpu: Evga Gtx 970
Cpu Cooler: Noctua NH-U9B SE2

Hi,

To be totally honest with you Jimbha.

The old bulldozer fx cpu`s don`t overclock very well.
Plus they also run very hot when you try to overclock them in anyway.

So really your best option is to go for a motherboard that has a amd 990fx chip set on the motherboard.
And buy a new fx cpu based on the Vishera core.

An 8350 or a 6350 would be fine, from the factory default core frequency settings of each of the cpu`s listed as an option.
You can over clock each by an extra 800 Mhz in speed with most fx cpus with a vishera core.

If you have a water cooling loop, a Aio If you get a good cpu when you buy it, you can often reach a 900 Mhz to a 1 Ghz overclock of the cpu with a few voltage adjustments, when you have a motherboard with a...

Your Noctua cooler will be just as good, as it`s a big cpu cooler, so I would expect an overclock in the 800 Mhz to 900 Mhz without much of a problem with a cpu core voltage bump to around 1.5v. Jimbha.

Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 boards are good for overclocking and bios features to do so Jimbha.

And are very stable when overclocking provided you don`t go to mad with the OC of the cpu.

Btw what you mean about that fx 8350 will throttle on my current mobo? Asus says that it will be just fine with it and its supported can i get some more info on that?

Admirable
All 780 chipset boards don't have a strong enough of a power phase or cooling for the VRMs to run an fx 8350 properly. So you might get full performance for a couple of minutes but shortly after you will throttle to the point where the games aren't enjoyable anymore.

What he means is the FX 8350 cpu is classed as a 125w part.

It needs a motherboard that states it can provide 125w to the cpu via the cpu socket of the motherboard jimbha.

If the board only states 95w cpu support then as said you will have problems running a FX 8350 cpu on your board.

If it is 125w capable, then it may require a bios firmware update to support the FX 8350 cpu jimbha.

Just had a check yes it does support a 125w FX cpu, but you may as said be required to update the bios firmware of your motherboard before you install the FX 8350 cpu jimbha.

The link bellow is to the bios update firmware files for your motherboard, just put in what windows version you are using on your system and the bit version 32bit or 64bit jimbha.
