So i just built my first computer, it ran fine on everything brand new. I didn't have the graphics card just yet. And i was waiting to get and old and well used card from my friend. When we plugged everything into the computer (the card) which was an old gtx 550 ti. It didn't take long before an explosion happened. My friend saw it close to the cpu. Alot of smoke filled my room and i turned the psu off. Thou it still fucking gave piwer to the pc. Until my friend dragged out the cable. So we hoped it was the graphics card. We took it out. It ran on a single 6 pin. We started it again, and nothing started. Thou one mire explosion happened. Close to the cpu again. I think we killed the cpu, because nothing starts in the computer. But the cpu looks fine, the paste isn't burnt. Nor any burn marks on the cpu itself. Can i do anything or is it just to throw and save up one more year?

Specs:

Cpu: amd fx 8320
Psu: Corsair CX600
Graphics card: gtx 550 ti
Ram: vengeance ddr3
Mobo: msi 970A-G43 PLUS
Case: Antec gx500

Can really an old graphics card kill the computer?

Not for nothing, but if you flipped your PSU switch, and it still was giving power, it sounds like something is wrong with your PSU? Not really and expert here, but conventional wisdom.

If the PSU wouldn't turn off even when you flipped the switch my bet would be that the PSU is at fault. Whilst the CX600 doesn't have a fantastic reputation it's still not a horrible gutless wonder type of PSU and certainly should not have behaved in this way.

I'd RMA the PSU first and try and test the other components to see what the damage is. It sounds like you've been very unlucky. Was the 560Ti working fine in your friend's PC previously?

There no chance that you might have plugged a PCI-E cable into the motherboard by mistake is there? They are easy to confuse with the EPS connector...

check the switch on the PSU, also its more likely your MOBO or PSU that has been fried, rarely will the CPU get killed with any sort of electrical mishap (power outage, lightening strike, etc). Some computer shops will test hardware for free to help you identify your problem, i would recomend doing that unless you have friends that you can test your components with.
