PS4 worth buying right now?

I was thinking about buying a console (ps4 / xbox one) , but it's almost 3 years from their release.
Is it possible to say , how many years is left until a new generation of consoles come?
Like , at least 3 years? or less?
And is new xbox one S / equivalent ps4 refresh worth considering? I do not really care about 4k and probably VR neither , just playing games.

There was 7 years between PS3 and PS4. Will it be 4 more years before the next console release??? My son just got a PS4 a couple of weeks ago. There are still plenty of people playing PS3 - even though it's been out for about 10 years.

My understanding was that the new updated PS4 was to better support VR and 4K gaming - anything else was fine with the original PS4
