Will a GTX 750 Ti Low Profile Card work in a Dell Inspiron 3650?

Hi everyone,

I have an Inspiron 3650 that I want to upgrade for my mother, but the expansion options are extremely limited. What is the best graphics card that I can use in this system, given its pathetic 240W PSU and requirements for a low profile card?

I have my eye on this one, but the PSU requirement gets me a bit worried.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MW8NXAW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Is it possible to use it? I know it lists a 300W PSU requrement, but given that its a low energy card and only requires 60-75W to run, could I get by on the 240W PSU? If not, what is the best card I could put in this system to upgrade it?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I've never come across a system so limited in terms of its upgrade potential. Its driving me nuts, and Dell's Tech Support is utterly useless in advising me on what my options are.

I know this post is old but I just upgraded my Dell Inspiron 3650 from a Nvidia Geforce 745 gtx to a 1050 gtx ti both of them required a 300 watts powersupply box but I had no problem with neither cards using the stocked 240 watts that came with the system.

Yes, but you processor/ram/hdd/motherboard/etc etc, everything si drawing power from that meagre 240w.

Lets look at wattage requirements
CPU___________________150Watts Max
Video__________________ 100Watts typical
MB Fans x 2______________30Watts typical
4gRam x 4_______________ 20Watts typical
MB power consumption_____10Watts typical
SoundCard_______________10Watts typical
===================================
Subtotal 320Watts
Add 2 Disks 20watts ea 40Watts
###################################
System Ttl Wattage (ESTIM) 360 Watts

Your wattage requirements would be about 360Watts when running a game at 100% cpu.

I have a Intel 6 generation i5 6400 cpu, before I did the upgrade I did deep research. I found out that the powersupply in the Dell Inspiron 3650 can handle a 75 watts gpu with it factory configuration. The Nvidia Geforce 745 gtx required a 300 watts powersupply but some Dell systems was shipped with it as an upgrade from the 730 gt. I never had any problems with it.

You are not getting the point. For now its working fine, but in future you might face issues due to lack of sufficient power. Also prebuild PC s come with horrible psu units which are under efficient due to lack of quality capacitors and mosfet cooling.
Its good that its working for you but all I am saying is that, when you run that kind of stuff, you do it at your own risk.
Most people in this community doesnt endorse pre builds anyways. They are USUALLY over priced inspite of having cheap parts. At the same cost you can build yourself a more powerful machine with better parts.

I got your point and understand exactly what you are saying but as I said I did deep research before I did the upgrade. If you look it up the Nvidia Geforce 730 Gt that come with the pre-built system requires a 300 watts powersupply. So why would Dell risk putting a gpu in a system if the powersupply can't handle it? The new Nvidia Geforce 1050 GTX ti are low power graphics card that does not require extra power. There was a link that describes how much power a Dell Inspiron 3650 will need to run that card and this card fell under the 240 watts power drawing.

Thanks you very much and do your research. Look at that link I posted and read the notation number three. I'm not trying to be a smart mouth but do more research before you try to assume a person does not know what they are talking about.

I have already done my research. What point number 3 says is that it is a viable option but depends on the manufacturer. I have seen plenty of Dell PCs going kaput due to shortage of psu power, when a gpu is upgraded. When they are shipped with certain parts they dont expect to be upgraded and hence their highly customized parts. You need to do more research on those aspects before basing arguments on facts.
If you put that gpu in a AMD pc, theres no way it will be able to keep consistent power requirement.

Lord have mercy! I keep stating I did the research and you keep telling me I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm tired of trying to to explain it to you good night. Some people knows too much for their own good.

I never said you didnt do your research. While your research was streamlined to a more specific cpu/gpu, my response was based on more generic scenarios. You must understand the perspective in which the conversation is going on. While your case might be true for those specific parts, the same is not always true for other parts.

That's why I keep stressing I did deep research but know matter what I say you think I'm just wrong. I believe if I put an article right in your face you will say it still won't work.

I'm basing my answer on the type of system this post is referring to, the Dell Inspiron 3650. If he is talking about the same one with the Intel cpu, I'm referring to that.
