I'm looking buy a big gaming PC. Which is best to get 4 x GTX 980Ti or 3 x GTX 1080. Which will give the best performance.

If you're hell-bent on SLI, dual 1070's will be your best performance / cost.
1070 => 980ti
Lower power and heat
Fairly close to 1080 performance
3+ GPUs splits your PCIe lanes and will not get you better performance with high-end GPUs. It can actually HARM performance.
I would still recommend a single 1080 though.

GTX 1080s can only do dual SLI right now first off, second you wouldn't ever really want more than two GPU's. There are several problems that can arise from using SLI, and while theoretically it should boost your graphics, using more than 2 will actually start to lower your FPS on a lot of games. Also, there is really no situation in which you would ever need more than 2 1080s, considering a single one is more powerful than 2 980s in SLI according to nividia.

Thank you for the information it has really helped focus the mind. The problem is that technology is moving at lighting speed and if you don’t keep up with it you get left behind. Your comments have really help and I’m now sorted in what I’m going to do.
