Preferably looking for new parts or very lightly used.

Would like an 860k or fx6300
Would need a board that games and overclock well to suit the cpu I get. Fm2 or am3.

Currently I have nothing for parts.
It's a scratch build to get myself a gaming rig going. I'm an AMD fan so I'm sticking with them.

I'm in Canada. Budget is the best prices I can find.
Not really interested in buying cpu's that were previously overclocked or used for long periods of time. Can't afford to have something die on me after I get it running.

Hmm, I really wouldn't suggest getting something like a 6300. Something like an intel i5 6100(good with budgets) will easily surpass a 6300. It depends whether or not you're willing to buy a newer mobo and RAM.

Amd has plenty of chips available that game extremely well and cost a fraction turn of what Intel chips do.

The bold part is absolutely not true. I understand being an AMD fan because I have always been an AMD fan, but AMD has not even released any new material in several years and simply cannot compete with Intel right now in performance OR price. Intel is better at every single price range. As stated above the $110 i3 6100 beats the entire AMD lineup in gaming and it can be put on a $40 motherboard. The $60 G4400 beats the FX6300 in a lot of games too, and it beats the Athlon x4 860k across the board.

Yeh I'm very much an AMD fan. I'm not really interested in owning an Intel based pc.
Even with the upgrade path I just want to personally build this around amd as my last 2 desktops were also amd based and both performed excellent for me in price ranges I was comfortable with.

I had an older athlon x3 first, then my current 965 be build, and I'm interested in trying another amd cpu but this time around with a better board, over clocking, and a better gpu as my 7850 doesn't cut it anymore even though I haven't peaked my 965 yet gaming.

The 860k and fx6300 caught my eye as good overclockers to play with, also if the 6300 would offer better task performance outside of games being a 6 core I'd like to try it as I've never owned a 6 core.
I'm open to buying a used one that's in good shape and hasn't seen a ton of use if it'll save me some money.

Also a question. I have my eye on a brand new un boxed saphire 7970 that's never been used for ~200$ is that a good deal? Always wanted one but
Couldn't afford them when they were new Tech.

What would it be equal to now days? R9 290?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

A FX6300 would barely be an upgrade over you 965. The 860k would likely not be any better.

Remember that even decent overclocking requires a GOOD AM3 motherboard so don't go cheap there. Get something with a 8+2 power phase.

If you have a 965 now, I would go for a FX8320 and a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P motherboard.

A 7970 for $200 isn't a deal for anyone but the seller.

Zen should be out by the end of the year. It should be roughly close to Haswell clock for clock so AMD will be competing with 2 year old Intel CPUs instead of the 6 year old CPUs they compete with now. Or it could be a complete flop as I don't see how they will get competitive clocks out of the architecture and still be able to deal with heat but that's another conversation. Either way Zen will be better than the current lineup.

Wow only the 280x. Didn't think it was that low.
I'd be better off with a 290x then for the 250 mark maybe? There is a 6 month old one with warranty at that price. Not sure if it's transferable I'd have to ask.

Maine reason I mentioned the 6300 was cause I can save a lot of money on this second pc going that route. Haven't seen too many 83xx models for less then 120 used and there still 200+ in canada.

Gonna keep looking though. Thanks again guys.

on a side note have they said a concrete release date for Zen? Looking for an upgrade over my i5 3570k...with playing gta 5 on modest medium/high settings and streaming at average settings it got to 100% constantly and had random stuttering. A 6 core/12 thread zen at even sandy bridge level ipc would be amazing to me tbh, especially if zen is priced cheap. If they're haswell level ipc that's even better.

I've honestly thought about switching out my i5 set up for an 8 core AMD since I multitask alot and game/stream as well. Although I guess for the same price I could nab an old i7 2600k for the same price as an AMD cpu/mobo roughly...not sure how the 8 AMD cores would fare against the older sandy bridge i7 in gaming/multitasking/streaming, although still stronger, it's still only 4 cores with HT vs 8 (although weaker) cores in the 8320 FX

been wanting an upgrade over my gtx 660 too but I refuse to pay the price gouged prices for the rx 480 or gtx 1060's I've seen online...on any major place they've been sold out since release

So I picked your answer haha but it was unintentional yet still what I'd like to do as you've been really helpful.

Totally understand the zen coming soon, also the rx cards being newer, better, and possibly cheaper.
But I'm more or less at a pint where I'd like to have a second pc that's better then my current one but doesn't need to be over the top.

Currently the wife and I share the one we have as she does her photo shop work and browsing on it and I game on it.

Having even just an 860k based rig with a better gpu then my 7850 with more Vram would be sufficient.

Main reason I bring this up again is I've recently spoke with a guy in the classifieds here who's selling some gently and not long used parts that would get me up and going even cheaper then budget new. Sooner.

My biggest thing was, with an 860k at 4ghz+ and a 280x or better 3gb can I play all the games I enjoy at max settings and maintain 50ish+ fps.

So far from what I've read and researched I'm pretty confident I can.
I don't play bf, nor do I care much for the massive mp shooters. other then Arma III, and cs:go occasionally.

Primarily I'm playing skyrim, nba 2k16, civilization V, borderlands, and darksouls etc...

I'm definitely aware of Intel chips being better. It's just a matter of preference. I gotta stick to my guns.

Odds are after zen is out and has been for a bit I will slowly put a zen rug together too.

Such is the life of a gamer who's tight budget restricts him from obtaining expensive new hardware when it's released.

I've thought about getting a 390, although my psu is only an evga bronze 500w...but would the 390 fully support direct x 12 and async compute like the rx 480 does? I heard the 480 will fare better in the future because of that and vulkan too -vs- the 1060 (and has more vram too)

just currently playing the waiting game for something to come into stock that's not price gouged
