I currently have the notated Xfinity speeds but i'm getting frustrated due to a lot of lag while i play. i also have a netgear X6 so it's not my router. my question is would i get better speeds for my money if i switch to the fiber optics or do i stick with cable?

It would be unlikely there is a significant different in the overall latency maybe a little more on one or the other. It would greatly depend on the game and the location of the server.

The lag tends to be inconsistent latency rather than total latency. The games adjust for the overall latency but if it changes a lot they get confused and cause the lag spikes.

So your first step is to try to find the point you get a large inconsistency in the latency.

Run a tracert to the server you are using. You might see the problem in the tracert if you run it a number of times. You are looking for large changes in the numbers that come and go. If you are seeing it in hop1 then you are playing on wireless or there is a problem with...

If you are seeing it in hop1 then you are playing on wireless or there is a problem with your router. If the problem is in hop2 there could be a issue with connection coming to your house and you could call the ISP and see if they will fix it.

Problems past this point are in the ISP network. These are they types of things that changing ISP may help. Problem is issue like this could also happen on verizon especially if both ISP are having issues with the game companies ISP.

When I had Fios many years ago i had zero problems with it but I know others that have had massive issues and verizon didn't have a clue. Hard to say all ISP you can have major issues with, it generally isn't the technology it is they have a lot of low level techs who just reads his troubleshooting script but doesn't understand it.
