Computer Specs:
GPU: Asus, Geforce GTX 970
CPU: Intel i7-6700k @4.00GHz
Memory: 16 GB ram
OS: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit

So this is my first build. When I originally had the computer up and running it was working great. I had all the drivers up to date and had steam and a few games installed. About two weeks after first booting it up I was playing cities skylines. While I was playing the screen went buggy and the game crashed and soon I got the blue screen of death. After that I couldn't really boot up in regular mode. I only could boot up in safe mode. Since I didn't know how to fix it I decided to boot up from the disc and wipe the HDD clean and re-install windows. After re-installing the computer started to have black lines on the screen and then I'd get the bsod again. So I tried again with re-installing but this time updated the GPU driver updates first. Now for the most part it will boot up and run. But now when I run a program or try to update my system the computer freezes on me. Also I sometimes get the black lines on boot up but not on the main screen. I should also say that my PSU is a evga 1000GQ.

Solution
Have you overclocked your 970?

Other than that, if you are within warranty, I'd say try to run the PC on iGPU from the 6700K, obviously you can't game but the black lines issue should go away, if it does, it's probably a hardware issue with the GPU, return it.

Thanks for answering,
As for overclocking my gpu, I don't recall doing that. Although I did install the disc that came with it (GPU Tweak 2) It allowed me to OC but I would only put it in Gaming Mode. Now when you mean run my PC off the 6700k. Are you talking about uninstalling the GPU and booting up using only the CPU? Thanks again for answering! :3

i7 6700K has intergrated graphics, meaning that on the back of your PC, on the IO panel of your motherboard, there is a (probably) HDMI connector, some motherboards also include a DisplayPort. So you could run the PC with a monitor / TV hooked up to that and remove your graphics card from the PC. If that fixes all your problems (obviously don't try to run a heavy game, the intergrated grahics of the CPU aren't really made to game with, it's relatively weak) you know for a fact that the problem is the 970, in which case you can return it under warranty.

Ok so I basically removed the graphics card from the motherboard and booted up my PC. I couldn't test it on a game to see if it would crash so I played around on the internet for a couple of hours while running a couple of background programs. I had no black lines on boot up or on main screen the whole time. Also things seemed like they were running a lot smoother. So then I decided to do like you said and just look at returning the graphics card. Although I bought it through Amazon and can no longer return it do to being outside the 30 day return policy. So I went to the manufactures site to get a RMA. Sounds like since it has a 3 yr warranty and it's the manufactures directly. I'll probably only be able to return it to get it fixed and sent back.

Thanks again!

No problem, just remember, troubleshooting is mostly ruling out things by disabling as much as you can one at a time ;)

I hope it won't take them over a month to return it like some RMA processes do... :S
