You can absolutely do that - the one has nothing to do with the other. You should really have at least 8GB system RAM if you play the newest titles, though.

4gb of ram is not enough for many modern games. For a gaming rig you currently want atleast 8Gb of ram.

All depend of what you want to play, what OS you are using ... ,but bignastyid is right 8GB RAM is recommended for most games now (and 8GB ram is not that expensive).
