Will Asus X99-A II support Samsung 950 Pro as boot drive in NVMe?

I think I messed up; I have an Asus X99-A II on order as well as a 950 Pro that I want to use as a boot drive. I'm afraid it won't run in NVMe.

I'm a noob... I'm not even sure what "run in NVMe" means... I'd just like to know if the 950 Pro can be used as a boot drive on that motherboard and if it will run as fast as possible.

My build list:

  • Intel Core i7-6850K 3.6GHz 6-Core Processor
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Asus X99-A II ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard
    Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB (4 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
    Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB (4 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
Samsung 950 PRO 512GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
MSI GeForce GTX 1080 8GB Video Card
Corsair 500R Black ATX Mid Tower Case
EVGA 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
    LG WH14NS40 Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer
Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro OEM 64-bit

Multiple memory kits are not guaranteed to work together by Corsair. 128GB kits are available. Reason for no guarantee is that they have never been tested together. Rated Specifications are for one kit not two.

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 128GB (8 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Memory (Desktop Memory) Model CMK128GX4M8B3200C16

yes you can. In fact i just did that and my spec is very similar to yours (6850k, Corsair DDR4, GTX1080, Asus Strix X99 mobo). I would recommend only have the 950 pro on the mobo when installing your OS. Then install other HDD/SSD.

It worked perfectly for me.

Hi,

I'm curious; are your USB3.0 ports all working correctly? I'm having intermittent issues and Asus tech support just told me to re-install the OS (which I did). I have a WD 2TB USB3.0 Disk Drive that just won't work in the front port (or in 2 of the rear ports). Strangely, it will work in the front port if I use an old USB3.0 to 2-wire split cable.I've spent over a week trying different drivers, etc.. and I've given up. Sending it back and getting an MSI.

I just fixed ALL my USB ports actually...
They were working fine when i installed my OS and after a restart all my USB ports were dead. Front rear whatever.

It was a driver issue and I managed to fix this by connecting my mouse to the only USB 3.1 port (to my surprise it was working lol), went into the device manager and updated every USB-related driver.
