I haven't been able to find much about this. As far as I know the newer versions are slightly more efficient but that's based on only one thread I've been able to find stating differences between v1, certified, vs v2 which is bronze certified.

Also, how would I be able to identify between each version?

EDIT: I"m looking at the cx500, I can't tell if the local shops are selling the older versions or not.

Solution
The specs to identify them should be on the box.
V1(part number isn't 80 plus certified and only rated to deliver 408w@30°C on the 12v rail
V2 is white certified and also only rated for 408w@30°C
V3 is bronze certified and rated for 456w@30°C
However all 3 of those are poorer quality, only rated for 30°C temps and not units I'd recommend.
The newer CX550m is a bit better, it has a higher temp rating(40°c) and a longer warranty(5yr). While there are no professional reviews of the newer units yet, rumor has it they should be quite the improvement over the old series.

Solution
The newest decent CX models only come in 450/550/650w modular varieties.

You won't finds old v1 models anywhere , unless they've been sat on a shelf since 2011.

Any 430/500/600 w CXmodel modular or not will be the mediocre cwt v2's.
I dont think they're as bad as people make out but in all honesty they're not that good value .

I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of shops here in Hong Kong tried to get away with that. The shop I tried earlier wouldn't tell me which version it was, the guy tried to sell me a another brand claiming 80+ when there was no such indication on the box.

My other options in the price range right now are the corsair VP, Antec VS and Cooler master non rated ones which I'm willing to consider.

You mean corsair vs & antec VP.

Some of the antec are excellent quality delta units , some are average quality fsp .

However I would take even the antec fsp made units over both the corsair vs & cm non rated units.

If you're not entirely sure what models these are then the antec are going to be a fairly safe bet either way.

Yeah, that's probably what I meant, it's quite confusing. The VS is nice and cheap, I'm wondering if it's the same as the CX series where there are different versions out there, hard to find info on most entry level psu's.

For the 500w psu's these are my options, I might also check the cooler master gx if it's in my price range.

I could go with the antec Neo Eco 2 450w for around the same price as the rest of these but I still can't figure out just how much exactly I need for my i-5 6500, B150M-A, 4 hdd's, dvd-rw and pci card. I guess it's better to go with as much power as I can get.

EDIT: Oh wait, VS series only has 4 Sata connectors and I need at least 5.

EDIT2: So does the VP series... I could have sworn I read 5 or 6 earlier.
