Hi guys

My Config
Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T
Kingston Ram 2x4GB (KVR1333D3N9)
Nvidia 650Ti Amp 2GB
Cooler Master 600W PSU

So the problem here is that one of my ram module got faulty few months back. I got it replaced that time and today the replacement also got faulty. One thing to point here is that I got a normal stick rather than my original slimmer module, though I know it doesn't make a difference. The other module I use is still a slimmer module.

My question is that can I use a different module along with one 4Gb x KVR1333D3N9 as this module is discontinued and hard to find in the market. The stock available online is quite costly. I will get the replacement in some time, but I want to play a game which requires 8gb ram and I am not able to make myself wait for it. I am ok buying a new 4GB module which I can continue to use.

Other thing is I have 4 slots, Can I use 8+4 in dual channel (4GBx3)? What is the difference between a 8GB single channel and 4+4GB dual channel usage.

Solution

i dont see a huge issue with ram as long as its similar its not wise to mix ram sticks

but as long as its the same voltage and same speed and same cl number etc it should be fine

single channel vs duel channel is quite significant as single channel has a limited bandwidth pool

thats why people say 2x2gb is better then 1x4gb

you can use 8gb and 4gb ram as long as its the same type otherwise your risking performance

example you can use a 4gb stick of vengence LP and regular vengence as there essentially the same ram
