Should I keep free space on HD for media files to work properly, don't want to mess up library

Old school of computer thought, leave one third free, for thinking... or can I fill it to the max? Just wondering what the train of thought is nowadays?

Rule has not changed, leave some free space. If you fill it up to the tilt, nothing is gonna immediately blow up but little problems here and there will start creeping up. HD continuously to drop$, frugal now, pay$$ for it later.
