Hey guys, I'm kind of a newbie to custom building. I've been going through the list of motherboards out there for the past 2 days and I just can't figure out which one to pick.

I know that these days, overclocking is the way to go to get the best performance out of a CPU. But I have no idea whatsoever in overclocking or water cooling.

I wanna be able to render 4K videos with ease, and also do some color grading.

I'm almost certain of what I want for rest of the build. _____________________________________________________________________________
Intel Core i7-6700 3.4Ghz Quad Core Processor
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler

4 x (Kingston FURY 16GB DDR4 Memory)
2 x {EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 8GB GAMING ACX 3.0} I might wait for a 1080 Ti (not sure yet)

Samsung 840 EVO 1TB 2.5" SSD
Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

EVGA 600B 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
_____________________________________________________________________________

I would be really grateful if someone could suggest me a good motherboard from each of these brands:- ASUS, MSI and Gigabyte

Thank you in advance :)

You will have to go with an SLI capable, Z170 motherboard, due to you wanting 2x GTX 1080. I would probably go ahead and spend the extra, for the 6700k, if you can afford to. The extra clock speed should prove useful, for your uses, even if you do not overclock. Not a good PSU choice either. Low on wattage, and quality, for what you are wanting. The Cryorig H7 would be a better cooler, for not much more money. Newegg has them. Assuming you want 64gb ram here. I would recommend something more like this.

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($332.79 @ B&H)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($34.99)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170XP-SLI ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($124.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill Aegis 64GB (4 x 16GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($239.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Intel 540s 1TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive ($289.00 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($67.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 8GB G1 Gaming Video Card (2-Way SLI) ($629.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 8GB G1 Gaming Video Card (2-Way SLI) ($629.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($119.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $2469.72

man .. 4K Video ? you entered a HUUUGE space here

forget overclocking all together , you need cooooooooooooores ..

people use 2x CPU motherboards for 4K Rendering ...

you need coooooooooooooooores and RAAAAAAAAM

at least 32GB RAM (64G recommended) and

6 to whatever cores depending on your budget ..

and you need VERY FAST SSD storage ...

and VERY fast Harddisk...

Hey logainofhades, Thank you for responding. But what you've suggested is almost completely different from my setup. I believe, overclocking is for people who know what they're doing. I do not want to screw this up. So, I'll be sticking to the 6700.
I've switched to the cooler and the SSD that you suggested.

According to pcpartpicker.com, The total wattage for my setup is: 155W - 511W. So why would I need more than 600W?
Isn't a Z170 motherboard for overclocking? Could you please suggest a mobo that has all the good stuff like USB 3.1, 5.1 or 7.1 audio?

Thank you so much :)

And Samer1970,
I've already gone way over budget with my current setup. And I gotta say that I only need to work with footage from an A7s II. (not Red's and Arri's) As much as I'd love to buy something like what you're suggesting, it doesn't sound cheap at all. :/
I remember reading that "editing software programs" have a lot to do with "hyperthreading". (I have no idea what that means)
Does "more cores" mean better "hyperthreading"?

It is different, for a reason. Only Z170 boards are SLI capable, which you need for 2x GTX 1080. None of the other Skylake capable chipsets can run SLI. The board I chose has one of the better onboard audio chips also.

That 600w PSU is not a quality unit. Also you want more of a buffer, than that. As they age, PSU's do lose a bit of their output, due to capacitor aging. That is why I chose the 850w. You could save some cash and go with the B2 version, instead. The 6700k isn't much more, than the 6700, and has a stock clock advantage of 600mhz. You do not have to overclock the 6700k, mine isn't, currently.

Hyperthreading is an Intel tech that allows a core two handle 2 threads at once. So more cores you have, on a hyperthread capable CPU, the better it will multitask, and handle programs that can take advantage of the extra threading.

The 840 evo is an old drive, too.

Wow! very informative. Please answer 2 more questions.

1. May I know why you picked "G.Skill Aegis" over the"Kingston Fury" for RAM?
2. Do you know whether programs like "Sony Vegas Pro/Adobe Premiere Pro/Da Vinci Resolve" actually work with an SLI setup? Cuz if the answer is "No", then I'll be wasting a lotta money. (Until today I thought the answer was yes, but then I watched a video on LinusTechTips saying that, in terms of gaming, only some games know how to take advantage of an SLI setup and others only use 1 GPU even though there are 2 GPUs attached to the motherboard. I hope I'm making sense.)

Thanks a lot for your advice! :D

Why are you going for SLI 1080 gtx anyways ? you can put the money you are paying for the extra 1080 in more cores and more ram ...

you will not go over budget ... you are buying an extra card that you will never really need

what is your budget?
