i am building a gaming pc and my parents have got me a gtx 1070. but, i do not have the money to buy a cpu under £100/$135. the only worry that I have is that i dont want to bottleneck my 1070. i do not mind buying a cpu second hand, and I have found many good deala on slightly older generation cpus like the xeon e5 2650l v3. the only problem with these cpus are that their motherboards are very expensive. i could do with some advice on some cpus that are cheap, have cheap motherboard options and will not bottleneck a gtx 1070.

P.S.
I got the gtx 1070 for my birthaday, so i would have to wait another year to fully build my pc if i waited for a cpu, but maybe christmas (if i had a similar budget)

Solution
For that GPU get an i3 6100 MINIMUM, if you can't afford one, tell your parents you need to return the GPU and then get yourself an i3 6100/6320, or i5 6500 and a GTX1060 instead. Do NOT try using that GPU with AMD A chips or server motherboards

Thanks for the advice, I wasn't sure whether or not the i3 would bottleneck the gtx 1070, but if it only bottlenecks it marginally, I don't mind.

I was also thinking about the i5 6400 or the i5 4460 for an upgrade choice from the i3. Or would these not be good choices?

I was thinking about not going for the 6500, 6600 or 6600k because I want to buy a new case to upgrade from the bitfenix nova that I am currently thinking of going with. (Maybe the NZXT H440????)

The case and any accessories should be the LAST thing you spend money on. If you can afford the 6500/6600 (or 6600K and z170) if you don't go with a fancy case, keep the entry level case and get the better CPU now.

i will take your advice into consideration. I have managed to go with the core i3 6100 and a h170 motherboard. i am going to leave the H440 because i do agree with you. I was just a bit concerned that the lower quality components like the thin metal sidepanels, front panels and top panel would be worse suited to the system.

Any $30 case will be strong enough for everything but a 2kg+ big air cooler. The component you should be far more worried about is the power supply, make sure it's a good unit (EVGA G2, Corsair RMx, Seasonic G or XFX TS Gold are highly recommended)

I am using a bequiet pure power psu that is 80+ silver rated. Is there anything that I can afford to go cheap on with out impacting performance at 1440p?

There are no recent silver rated units, so an upgrade is suggested (though can't be sure if it's needed). If you want an upgrade, EVGA G2 550, XFX TS Gold 550, Seasonic G 550, and Corsair RM550x are all under $100 (and at least one will be <$80 most of the time)

It will take me until next year to finish saving up for the pc, as I have just had to buy a new car. I was wondering if I should wait for intels new kaby lake CPUs of Amds new zen CPUs, as they look to be very promising in terms of performance, especially zen
