my external HDD 2 tb randomly stopped working on my laptop after a windows 10 update. thing is the hdd works perfectly on other pc's or laptops and other hard disks work fine on my laptop. just my hard disk wont open up on my laptop. also i realized that the hard disk shows as a RAW file system on my laptop but shows up as a NTFS system on any other pc.
the laptop makes the usual sound and everything but it only has the drive letter assigned to it, no name or anything and if i click on it it takes a while and then pops up with an error message saying the drive is inaccesible
thanks in advance :)

Well just about to create new thread about this. Mine too have the same problem. I have 1TB WD Passport 2 year old external hard drive. The problem start after updating windows 10 anniversary update. When I attach the external drive for the first time after the update, my computer detect it but with inaccessible with "Local Disk" volume name instead of default one. In Disk Management, the drive is state as RAW file system.

I've tried many solution on the old thread, but none of it seems working yet. CHKDSK command option complete without an error but the drive still not acessible. Changing the drive letter and run CHKDSK after that also does not work. There is also a very detail step fixing this on http:// , but it's to complex...
Welcome to the community, @Nischay021!

I'd recommend you backup your data from the external on another PC first and make sure it is copied somewhere safe and sound. Afterwards, open Device Manager in your Windows 10 laptop and uninstall & reinstall the external as a device . While there, check your USB hub controller drivers as well. Windows Updates tend to replace some drivers with more generic and a bit outdated versions. In this case, you should go to your laptop manufacturer's official website, find your model there and select the OS version you have installed. Then you should be able to see all the available drivers & tools for your laptop, I'd strongly advise you to manually install the USB hub controller drivers from there.

Another thing that might help is plugging the external in a different USB port on your laptop and then check how it will get recognized in Disk Management again.

Keep me posted & good luck!

There is also a very detail step fixing this on http:// , but it's to complex and take much time and the end result is not the same to me.

The weird thing that I notice though, when I ran CHKDSK, it stated my drive as NTFS instead of RAW(or anything, i don't know), and also give correct volume label. CHKDSK run complete without any error. Using Easeus Partition Master also stated my drive as NTFS and i've already check partition with no problem.

The only software that give some hope is Active Partition Recovery, also it stated as NTFS, I can see all of my data in the drive. Following this video tutorial to fix boot sector, http://, instead of wrong boot sector information, my drive boot sector is still intact as shown in this picture,

The only safe solution is to backup all the data to another place, (which I don't have enough space for 1TB data), and reformat it. I hope someone can share any ideas or suggestion what can I do to fix this, possibly without to transfer out the data.

Thanks.
