I was on ebay last night to see what would fit my 2011 socket. I have a i7-3820 but saw that I could get a i7-3930k for around $150 or a i7-4930K for $310. Do you guys think that the i7-4930k is worth double the price of the older 3930k? I dont know much about the the differences between the two platforms (sandy vs ivy i think). Any insight would be appreciated. The only thing i saw was cpuboss but I dont think that is a very informative comparison of the cpu at these price point.

First, the obligatory question: Is the 3820K not cutting it for you anymore?

And now, to answer directly, the improved thermals from the 4930K might be a good investment, but I don't know if it's worth twice the price. If it's performance, then both are close to each other, but the 4930K has a healthy thermal advantage over the 3930K.

Here's some benchies: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/552?vs=1331

Cheers!

I am getting into the 40 to 50 in arma 3. Overwatch is fine at 70fps. My cpu runs hot, around 61c, and its in a antec 900 case with a nice aftermarket cpu fan.

Well, ARMA3 is very CPU intensive, so getting either one is going to improve FPS'es. For Overwatch, I don't think you will notice a change; and on any other FPS for that matter.

Strategy games and some Sim games like fast CPUs (more than multi core ones), so the 4930K has an edge there, along with ARMA 3.

Cheers!

There is definitely something holding you back, and I'm not sure it's the CPU. I've seen GTX 1070s hit >100 FPS with a locked haswell i5 in 1440p, and your CPU's single-threaded performance isn't much worse. Are you showing high CPU utilization during gaming? How much memory do you have?

Sorry for the delay in posting. I ordered a 3960x from ebay for $150 shipped. I wanted this chip back when I built this rig but they were like $1000. Now for that price I had to jump on it. I hope it works out (it has a 5 day doa warranty).
