Only 2gb recognized by system and BIOS from single 4GB Stick

So I recently received a newer laptop from a friend since my old one was overheating. It's an acer aspire M5 481pt-6488. It has a single memory bank that I confirmed both from sight and a crucial scan. Inside was a 4gb stick of ram, despite both system and BIOS only showing 2gb. In system it shows 2gb installed with 1.8gb usable. I've updated BIOS settings and done everything else I can think of including trying to change max memory in msconfig but it only shows 2048 after boot.

Any help, thanks.

I'm pretty sure it has a single slot and the only card I see is a 4gb. I took the whole damn keyboard off to find it. It could very well have been from someone trying to "upgrade" the computer since it was given second hand my knowledge of what's been done on it is limited. Everywhere I look online shows 6gb as typical though so I'm inclined to believe you somewhat. This is all quite frustrating to say the least.

Fixed! The slot was just a little loose so the memory wasn't sitting flush. I used a small piece of electric tape and was able to get it to lock into the clips and now the computer is reading 6gb between the 4gb and the 2gb onboard.

Thanks for the help and patience!
