So I'm going to be getting a new SSD and I want to reinstall my OS onto that.

From what I've read, I just install it, disconnect all other drives, install windows onto that SSD and then connect back my old hard drive?

Won't it cause problems since my hard drive still has windows on it and all its files? Or will it just reformat it when I try to connect it back?

I'm a bit confused here... thanks for any help

Solution
1. Prepare for Windows installation with USB tool
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

2. Connect boot drive (SSD) data cable to lowest numbered SATA port .... but don't connect:
-Ethernet cable
-SATA Data Cable for any other drives

3. Install Windows to boot drive after deleting any o partitions, recreating and formatting

4. Turn off Windows ability to install Hardware drivers

5. Install all hardware drivers from original media in boxes See Item 7 below

6. Connect ethernet cable and run Windows Update till it stops doing anything

7. Install...

What OS?
No, the old drive won't just reformat itself. You have to do that.
It won't cause problems, because you will have adjusted the BIOS boot order to ignore that drive.

If there's more than 1 hdd do any of them have windows on them?

If windows is one of them if you disconnect it, and you install windows on another hdd, you'll have to manually select the bootdisk.

Only prob is with some systems, if you dont unplug other hdd's when you install windows, parts of the install may end up on the other connected hdd

If none of the other hdds have windows on them just go into the BIOS change the bootdisk to flash drive / dvd / whatever it is save settings, then boot from it then install windows on it

7. Install latest drivers for ALL hardware from manufacturers web sites. The reason we didn't do this in step 5 is 3 fold:
-Sometimes MoBo CD comes with licensed utilities with product key embedded and these are not on web site versions
-Its advisable to establish a working out of box conditions
-Sometimes newer drivers require latest Windows Updates

If you have a 2nd drive ....

8. Shut down and connect HD data cable to 2nd lowest numbered SATA port.

9. Boot to BIOS and make sure that SSD is the 1st boot device, if not fix it

10. Boot to Windows

11. If you want to boot to your old Windows install, you can .. (keep as a backup) ... just change boot order in BIOS

12. Keep / dump whatever ya want

Could I just install the SSD, then turn on my computer and select reinstall windows from inside windows (if that makes sense)? Because my computer has a HDD in there with windows installed, and I want to add an SSD and then reinstall onto that. So if I just install it, then reinstall from inside windows won't I then be able to select the SSD as the new installation place?

No, it doesn't work like that.
You have to install from the installation DVD or USB.
