Hi community, I am in dire need of your help.

So in June, I bought the pc parts for my brother to get a new pc.

The build went well, but when we booted the pc, smoke went in the sata cables, and we had to RMA the motherboard and the hard drive.

After we got back the Motherboard, which was repaired, we plugged in a different hard drive with different cables, same power cable and PSU, and the pc did not detect the hard drive.

We got a new motherboard, and this time, and it booted without the hard drive, but once we plugged it in, it would not boot.

Then we got a new PSU, this time, the pc booted, but did not detect the hard drive.

ALL THIS TIME, the disk drive detected fine.

So now I am about to buy a new hard drive. Will this work and should I try anything else?

Initial motherboard: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/3L2rxr/gigabyte-motherboard-gah170d3hp

Initial PSU: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/4LkwrH/rosewill-power-supply-glacier600m

Initial SSD: http://pcpartpicker.com/product/7v38TW/pny-internal-hard-drive-ssd7cs1311240rb

Second MOBO https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Skylake-B150-Motherboard-M3/dp/B014YN6732/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1470892625&sr=8-2&keywords=msi+motherboard+skylake

Second PSU: 450W generic brand PSU, booted up fine.

Thank you so much, will respond ASAP.

What I am asking is should I buy a new hard drive because it is broken? Or is there some settings I need to play around with in order to get the system detecting the hard drive. Both on the old and new motherboard the disk drive was detected and working fine.

So should I use this to figure out if the drive is dead or not??
