A disk read error occurred

I have run into an extremely frustrating issue concerning the "A disk drive error has occurred" message. I can't seem to find anything that works to solve it. Here are some specifics. I get this message on startup about 19/20 times. In that rare 5% that it does boot up, it acts as if nothing is wrong. The system works perfectly, doesn't heat up abnormally, is blazingly fast, and can run anything I want it to. Then whenever it needs to restart for any reason, I'm back to running through this error time and again.

Here is what I've already tried. I transferred my SSD with the OS to a different working computer and booted it on that, it worked just fine. Then I dislodged all RAM from my machine, took the working RAM from the other machine and tried it. No dice. Replaced the GPU with a tested working one, still nothing. The three remaining things that need testing are the PSU, motherboard, and the CPU. As I don't have an easy way of testing any of those.

A few curiosities I've noticed: if I try to boot from a usb-hdd (say... a windows 10 installer) it functions as it's supposed to. I have tried other hard drives on this machine with no luck. I've tried other working sata cables in case mine were shot with no success, I've also tried them in all the different sata slots available.

Any suggestions with other things to try? I don't think the motherboard is bad as it's relatively new (though that's not much to go by). I've run tests on the CPU while it was up with no errors or issues found on it. Not sure how to even go about testing the PSU, other than it seems to work fine when the computer boots, no stuttering during games or anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: After a ton of fiddling, unplugging resetting, and other shenanigans, I ended up loading the optimized defaults in the BIOS and it booted up on the next restart. However I highly doubt that was the solution (I've tried doing that and fail safe multiple times with no effect). I currently have it up and running though, so before I restart the computer and struggle with getting it back up, are there any tests you would recommend running to check certain things? Or just any info about it that would help decide the culprit.

Hi there Joshua_112,

You've done some extensive troubleshooting. :)

You have just a single SSD right? It's strange that it booted up just fine when attached to another machine.

You've mentioned that you used different SATA cables and ports. Have you used different power cables as well? I believe it may be a good idea to do so.

It will not hurt to run the brand specific software on the SSD.(check health status)

Have you updated your MOBO's drivers?

As for the PSU, the easiest way would be to just get(borrow from somebody) a different PSU and try it on your system.

Cheers,
