Hello,

This drive has been causing headache after headache. It constantly doesn't boot, randomly turns off when in use, so I've been going through various steps to fix. Before I was going to run the Samsung Magician software to update the firmware, I ran a chkdsk with the f parameter selected. However, the drive turned off midway through that, so I'm now locked out of the SSD. Any help?

I should be able to have access to another bootable drive soon if that helps, any suggestions will be much appreciated. The drive is also the 250GB version.

Cheers,
Andrew

Edit: Drive is less than a year old, about 7 months.

Glad to hear you got it all working properly now, @Andrew!

Regarding the inaccessible HDD, I'd recommend you try Taking ownership of the HDD in Windows. It should make the HDD accessible again. If not, try running an HDD diagnostic utility as @Flying-Q suggested (preferably the HDD manufacturer's brand-specific one) to check up on the health and SMART stats of the drive.

Keep us posted if you encounter further issues. :)

Welcome to the TH community, @Andrew!

Unfortunately, checkdisk isn't really accurate for solid-state drives. I'd strongly recommend you use an SSD-specific diagnostic tool to determine the health and SMART status of the drive.
I'd also suggest you try resolving the issue with the SSD by plugging it into a different SATA port on the motherboard and use a different SATA cable. You should also go into BIOS and make sure the SATA mode for the drive is configured in AHCI. Can you share more about the troubleshooting steps you have gone through so far?

Hope this helps, though. Keep me posted.

Hi,

Pretty new to SSD's, so thanks for the chkdsk tip. Drive is AHCI configured.

Issue is it's write protected now thanks to the turn off midway through chkdsk. So, can I turn off read only with an old Windows 8.1 drive? I remember doing something with XP, but because one is Windows 10 & one is Windows 8, is it still going to be possible?

If I can get rid of the protection, I'll try changing the SATA cables & ports.Samsung Magician said everything was OK, yet Windows was telling me errors on the disk & to restart.

Cheers,
Andrew

Hello again, @Andrew!

Yes, of course, disabling the write protection is possible on both Windows 8 and Windows 10. Either way, if these commands don't help you with the write protection, definitely swap the cables and ports where the SSD is connected to on the mobo.

Another thing you could try as well is resetting BIOS. However, you will need to re-configure all the manual changes you have made to the BIOS settings afterwards.

Hope it works. Let me know how it goes. :)

Hi,

Got it all working, but I have a HDD that I cannot access nor boot, with error F:\ drive not accessible. Any ideas on how I can recover/wipe the drive?

Cheers,
Andrew

Right-click 'MyComputer' and select 'Manage' and when opened, select 'Storage'. There you will see all attached drives with their partition layouts. Even if a drive won't mount in explorer you should still be able to see a drive here. If it doesn't show here then it is a dead drive, cable or port. If it does show you can format it from here.

Get a copy of Crystal Disk Info and check out the condition of the drive.
