Hi

I live on a farm with various converted barns around an area of about 150m squared. But all the barns have thick stone walls and few windows.

The router is in the main farmhouse and gets all round the house obviously, and outside in the parking area as long as you are in clear sight of the router. But it cannot make it through any of the thick stone walls.

We got this TP-Link TL WA5210G outdoor extender access point thing. We set it up in a more suitable place and attached it by a very long ethernet cable to the router. We followed all the instructions, and yet it was still very unstable. It did get into the barns though, but some computers could not connect, and the main problem was that the internet was intermittent whether you were connected to the main router or the access point. It seemed to mess the whole system up! After reading reviews this seems fairly common.

So we are at a loss for what to do. Does anyone know what piece of equipment we need in this situation? Is there anything that can extend the wifi around a large area and be solid and stable?

Also, I live just round the corner of a stone wall that the wifi does not make it around, is there anyway to get wifi around one corner like that? Also, if you plug directly into the router via ethernet, then how long can the ethernet cable be and still be stable?

thanks, any info greatly appreciated, we've been trying to work it out for weeks in our spare time!!

Solution
If the barns are on the same power line as the house, you can use power line networking to run Ethernet to the barns and then add an Access Point sitting off that Ethernet connection the power line network device gives you. WiFi will not go through a thick stone wall. We have had this same issue in the basement of a hospital I worked in, they needed to put an access point in the same room with us.

HI Thanks Nigelivery. Well the TP link thing we bought was an access point. Will we not run into the same problems? Can you reccomend a particular model of the brands you said?

Is there any other way, or is access points the most common?
Thanks

TPLink v Ruckus are like chalk and cheese but like I said the price may be a factor. I also live in a stone house (walls 600mm deep) and use Ruckus, with careful placement they do work. I use the R500's. If getting Across to the outbuildings can not be cabled then I would also look at a point to point link, again Ubiquiti make some extremely good ones that shouldn't break the bank. One end would be cabled back to the router and the other end into the outbuildings with an AP. You would need to look at the respect recommended distances on the p2p as being too close to one another can severely lower performance.

Thanks for the replies. The various barns are not on the same lines as the house which is frustrating. And there are multiple barns! All with stone walls. The Ubiquiti stuff seems to be much better than TP link. Can anyone reccomend a model for an outdoor access point similar to the TP link I mentioned earlier? Sorry I really know very little about all this stuff. Will it be easy enough for me to setup?

I just posted another thread as for the time being Im thinking about going wired, as its not my farm, Im just helping out. But I really need internet, and a long ethernet cable doesnt cost too much. Maybe someone would be able to shed some light on that thread too :)

Thanks guys

Ubiquiti Picostation is great outdoors, LOS 500 meter but is only 2.4GHz (£58.00) you would need to check if its bundled with a POE injector.
