Should you use tap water? Absolutely not!
You can usually buy distilled water at your local super market, and always use that (not "purified", make sure it's "distilled"). As for other things you put in there, keep it minimal, usually the manual for your parts will list acceptable anti-bacterial/anti-fungal/anti-biological agents that are safe to use and what concentration.
