Hi there,

I've recently just registered website in the hope I can receive some advice after a very troubling experience.

To start i'll detail my old pc specs:

Asus P5QPL-VM EPU
Intel core 2 duo E7300 @ 2.66GHz
NVIDIA Geforce 9600 GT
600 W OCZ Power Supply
2 x 1gb Kingston DDR2 - 667 MHZ DIMM
500 GB Western Digital Hardrive
Toshiba DVD drive - not important

Anyway i recently bought new parts for my pc to upgrade and make it last a few more years so I could do some casual gaming and use some relatively demanding software efficiently.

So i bought:

New ram:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321472076259?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

4GB(2x2GB) DDR2-800 PC2-6400 Non-ECC Unbuffered Memory RAM 4 Desktop PC 240-pin

New Processor :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/152183672692?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME QX6700 (2.66 MHz QUAD CORE) SOCKET 775 CPU ~ SL9UL

New Heat Sink:

http://www.ebuyer.com/298308-cooler-master-hyper-tx3-evo-3-heatpipes-1x92mm-fan-cpu-air-cooler-rr-tx3e-22pk-r1

COOLER MASTER HYPER TX3 EVO

Now after I installed these components, the pre-bios screen recognized that the new cpu and ram was installed. however weirdly it recognized the cpu as a quad core and not an extreme.

Also when assembling the pc i attached the wrong sata cable to my hardrive so when first booted after the components were fitted it obviously didn't load to windows.

After turning off the system and attaching the right sata cable to the hardrive it still wouldn't boot to windows, and after about 5-6 restarts it still wouldn't, and the situation just got worse from then on.

I re-installed my original components and it still wouldn't boot.

After around 4 hours and several stuck screens including the asus express gate, start up repair and loading windows screen, it finally booted up normally after I removed and re-installed the original ram, heat sink and hardrive while it also did some hardrive recovery check.

What i'd to know is:

Whether the components I bought, are completely compatible with the mother board

Why the bios recognized the processor as a quad core and not an extreme (that could be down to a bad seller on ebay, but the retailers reputation was superb)

Whether because I wrongly connected my hardrive to the wrong sata when I first booted up the pc with the upgraded components, (and therefore didn't boot windows) had a profound affect on what was to follow

and finally, is it recommend to update either the bios or mother board drivers if there's any to update.

Apologies for the long winded question but I wanna describe the situation in full, any other technical specs required please say along with additional questions, and look forward to you response.

Cheers

The CPU isn't on the support list. It doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but that's a possibility. Update the Bios to the latest version and see if the new CPU gets recognized. You should also clear the CMOS after installing the new parts by unplugging the PSU, removing the CMOS battery, and then holding the PC power button for a minute or two. Replace the battery, plug the PSU back in, then reboot.

Ah i see, thanks for the reply. The Motherboard did recognize the CPU funnily enough, but i dont know if thats enough for it too work, do you know how i'd update the bios?

With regards with the CMOS battery I did exactly what you said apart from holding the pc power button for a entire duration, what would i expect from doing that, any difference in the boot or load up menu?

I've just tried to install the ram by itself also, the pc started going a little ape shit, so they'll get returned I think, despite its specs matching up with the motherboard.

Sometimes, shorting the CMOS pins or pressing the CMOS button doesn't completely reset the CMOS, so by holding the power button, you completely discharge the motherboard and clear the settings. Section 2.1 of your motherboard manual has instructions for updating the Bios.

I've updated the bios, that when well for a change. So to be excatly clear, should I try the new cpu now with an updated bios?

If that doesn't work I'll reset the cmos, but by shutting the pc down, and removing the power cable, I switch the pins, remove the motherboard battery, re-connect the power supply, turn on the pc and while that's happening hold the towers pc button?

No. Unplug the PSU and swap out the CPU. Then remove the CMOS battery. Hold the PC power button down for a minute or two, no need to jumper the clear CMOS pins. Then replace the CMOS battery, plug the PSU back in and reboot.

Just did what you said it and it wasn't having any of it, The PC ran up until I hit the bios screen, the cpu or tower fan speed up and it just shut up down completely, its not liking the processor one bit.

This happened 2 or 3 times on the trot, everything is installed correctly and securely.

Thanks for your help though, it looks like I might just the refund.

I may do, but to be honest after the day i've had I just want the ah heck returned as soon as possible, but i will buy that processor in the near future.

Finally before I close this thread, is any ram in particular you would recommended? Ideally i'd like a 2 x 2GB 800Mhz setup

Thanks for the help in the meantime, it was very much appreciated.
