By the end of the summer, I plan to have a gtx 1070 in place of my 960, and then sell my 960 for extra $$$. However, I recently watched a video on how i5s bottleneck 1070s. I wanted to know how bad it will be, and whether or not I should upgrade. I also am planning on doing light 4k gaming and lots of 2k gaming, so i also wanted to know if that would require a better processor

Solution

the higher the resolution, the heavier is the load on the GPU so the demands on the CPU drop.
the CPU bottleneck is happening when the GPU load is so light that the GPU can easily output 200+ frames while your CPU can only output 80
with higher resolutions the workload on the GPU increases the CPU still has to do the same calculation, so your GPU will only be able to display 60 fps while your CPU...

What about 4k? I know i won't be able to run many games high settings 4k, but what about the ones I can run 60 fps 4k? Will my cpu be alright?

so at 4k there won't be a CPU bottleneck

My final question is: Do you think a 1070 with my i5 4590 (stock cooler) and 8gb of ram is capable of gta 5 high settings at 2k? with my 960, I can get 60fps high settings at 1080p
