I'm looking to upgrade my 970 to a 1080 within the next few months but was just wondering if theres going to be a 1080ti in the pipeline? I cant see any info onlione and don't really want to get stung buying a standard aftermarket 1080 if the ti is only montsh away. I'd rather wait and get the ti. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

The problem is that there isn't much price room between $700 and $1200 for a 1080Ti that is lesser then a Titan X. Conversely for it to have more cores it would almost certainly have to be a Black Edition with 12GB of memory as well. I don't think Micron makes larger memory dies then the ones that are present on the 1080 and Titan X.

HBM2 would be up to 16GB but would require a completely different config and so far only GP100 GPUs have gotten that, and they aren't as big as GP102. So you could trade equal core performance but get the triple bandwidth that HBM2 offers potentially. But such a card might be more expensive then even the Titan X. (Looks like they already have a crippled 12GB HBM2 card on the way as well, so that is another...
There's no official word out there on the matter yet, but I think most people would tell you that It's prooooobably going to happen at some point in time. As to whether or not to upgrade, it would depend on what you're looking to get out of your system. If you want to run current and future games in 4k and/or VR, and get awesome frame rates, it would probably be wise to wait around for the 1080ti. If you're just looking to play stuff in 1080p or 1440p, or 4k in lower settings, then just go for the 1080.

thanks, yeah I only have a 1440p monitor but would like as many frames as possible for games like bf1. I could maybe wait and try and play it on lower settings with the 970 until the ti comes out. how long after the original aftermarket 980s came out did the ti version get released into the wild?

You would be getting awesome frame rates on a 1440p monitor with the regular 1080. I think it was a solid 6 months or so between the 980 and the 980ti. I would sooner recommend waiting on the 1080ti rather than going for an sli setup. Running a single card is way easier, and not all games work well with sli setups. If you did want to go the sli route, you could get one now and get the other one later though.

In your situation, I would most likely just get a 1080 now. A single 1080 should be plenty for a 1440p setup, and if later on down the road you decide that you want a 4k or VR setup, you could either get a second 1080, or sell yours and buy a 1080ti or whatever is out by then.

Almost 9 months between the 980 and 980Ti.

I don't think SLI is going to be that useful in the near future, support seems to be waning. Maybe in a few years when all the games you want to play are DX12 and Asynch capable, but by then a new GPU will be available.

980 GM204
980Ti GM200

1080 GP104
Titan X GP102
GP100 is available as a compute only GPU, while there are Quadros based on the fully functional GP102

A 1080Ti is a tricky aspect. The Titan X (Pascal) is a slightly crippled GPU with 12GB of memory. With the previous Titan X having double the memory of the 980Ti, they didn't really leave the room for that here. Doesn't look like HBM2 is on the table for GP102, and GP100 has stayed away from gaming GPUs, and is already the same core count as the Titan X.

You might recall the GTX780/Titan/780Ti which had performance in that order. The 780Ti was the fully functional GPU. They could do that here and release either a Titan X Black or a 1080Ti that has all 3840 potential cores enabled. That is what I am hoping for at least.

But I don't see it happening unless demand for the P6000 is low. If they are having yield issues making 1080s then this larger chip is going to be that much harder. Might be why the Titan X popped up so quickly, they can make crippled GPUs all day.

yeah I really cant see them releasing a ti this close to the new titan x. I'll get a 1080 in the next few months and go from there. Doubt ill be upgrading to 4k anytime soon as i've just in the last three or four months bought a rog swift. There's no 4k monitors that can refresh that fast yet is there? or if there is they will be out of my price range I would think. Thnaks for all your input :)

Doesn't seem to be anything above 60Hz for 4K for a while yet. There is a 30" OLED (wow!) 4K 120Hz monitor, for the bargain basement price of only $4,999. Actually something I have been looking forward too, an OLED monitor bigger then 13" and smaller then 60" actually intended to be a monitor.

3440x1440 ultrawide is available at up to 100Hz if I recall correctly.
