Hi!, My computer only has 4gb ram and I decided i want to upgrade it and was about to buy a 16gb chip thing but someone told me I had to figure if my motherboard can handle it.

How would i go about doing this?, i dont want to mess anything up, i see some empty slots and just want to add some ram to my pc.

Each motherboard takes specific speed an type of ram. Cant install it if its not the right kind, Will cause all kinds of issues. Look up your pc model number if its prebuilt an look at its specs it should tell you what motherboard you have.

Yep.
List what your specs are for your PC, and what copy of windows you have (32 bit or 64 bit), this can be found by typing 'PC Info' into the windows search bar, and looking under System Type.
If you're wondering what the specs are but don't know, give us the model of your prebuilt system.

Doesn't really matter to be honest, all you need to know at a basic level is what type of RAM it supports, as the motherboard will default to its native frequency, and in terms of AM3+ motherboards, typically supports at least 8GB of RAM in each slot.
Given that there is supposedly empty slot(s) (plural), I would say that it would easily support two 8GB modules.
