What do you guys think about two crucial MX300 525gb ssds partitioned to 384 each and Raid 0 the partitions. Then put the OS on one of the non raid partitions? My goal here would be to have the speed of the raid 0 for bigger files but keep the better random read capabilities of a single drive.

Solution
RAID doesn't work like that. If you use hardware based RAID it will only work with whole disks. If you use software RAID (Windows Storage Spaces) it only does mirroring, not striping as in RAID 0.

Thanks for the answers guys. I just upgraded the drive in my mid 2012 MacBook Pro to an MX300 and I like it a lot. But compared to the new Dell they gave me at work it feels just a bit slower. My MacBook benchmarks (I understand these don't translate to real world) are around 480 mb/s. I understand I have SATA 3 limitations. Any input on possible solutions is welcome.

SATA III is limited to 600mb/s, the MX 300 according to crucial itself maxes at 530 mb/s, on top of that there may be other factors in the system bus slowing it a bit more. At this point the difference is 50mb/s which is negligible. Thats as fast as that drive is gonna go.

on the Z87's there was matrix raid, where you could define two different raid volumes on two drives (might still be around now), so you could have 2 disks, with some raid0 and some raid1. So technically yes. Is it a good idea no.

I did it with WD re4's, and the raid1 partition would regularly fail and need rebuilding, not worth the hassle in the end. And that was with the performance increase on HDDs.

With SSD's there is no need for it, or if you are going to do it, then do it properly.
