I have just bought a Panasonic TX-65DX902b TV and my R9 390x 8GB Amd Radeon card does not support 4k HDR so cannot upscale and my tv which is a 4k TV and also the card isnt HDR so although my card is only about 4 or 5 months old im now looking at replacing it. So I was wondering what are the best cards to go for that can play 4k HDR movies through HMI 2.0?

I was looking at AMD because they are cheaper than Geforce and you get more for your money but now Ive got a HDR tv I dont think AMD are currently good enough and I might be forced into buying a Geforce. I was looking at a 1080 geforce msi card and thinking that might be the way to go. I was also looking at the RX480 by radeon but I think my current r9 390x gaming msi card looks better but doesnt have the hdmi 2.0 that I need. any ideas?

I dont really play games too much but I do play them, games like need for speed, tomb raider, GTA V. Witcher 3, Crysis 3, Battlefield 4, Hitman Absolution etc But what i want is mainly for movies I need to change it and I dont want anything less than 8GB VRAM because thats what I currently have so I don't want to be downgrading in any way.

Specs in case you want to know are:

CPU: i7-3820 Intel 3.60GHZ (its not over clocked)
HDD: Samsung 850 EVO SSD 500GB for windows
Western Digital Green X 4 2TB and Western Digital Black 2 TB
Memory: 16GB of Corsair Dominator 1866mhz Ram
Graphics Card: MSI R9 390x Gaming AMD Radeon
Bluray Drive: Pioneer BDR-S07XLT and a 2nd Bluray read drive
Case: 9 fans and Cosmos II Case
Motherboard: Asus P9X79 Intel x79 (socket 2011) DDR3

For little over £750 you could get gtx1070 sli. For little over £650 you'll be looking at a gtx1080. Considering the decent mix of games that don't offer decent support for sli, and some that suffer under sli, the few games where sli shows improvements aren't worth the price or aggravation.

Stick with the 1080, much better overall performance. Or wait on the maybe 1080ti.

Do you need it right now? Because it's likely that the 1080 TI for most likely $800 will be the perfect ideal 4K card for years to come, and the RX 490 is probably coming soon with the performance of a GTX 1080 for a lower price. If you need a card right now though and can't wait then the GTX 1080 is your ideal card. Just be aware that it can't push 60FPS without turning a lot of the settings down.

Thanks for quick response. well Im not in a mad rush, but I was hoping to get one by about october at the latest, but my R9 390x is still ok its just a shame about it not being able to cope with 4k hdr. when i watch netflix through my tv the quality is so much better. sharper, more colourful than when watching a bluray from the computer or a full 30gb bluray download via powerdvd14. so its making watch more netflix and not as many downloads, the hobbit didnt look as vibrant and have as much depth on the pc as it did on netflix either. Maybe it is worth the wait then for 1080 ti or a cheaper rx490 with 1080 performance

Well the RX 490's been sort of confirmed, but the 1080 TI is kind of complicated. It hasn't been confirmed or leaked. But yeah I'd wait for as long as possible,

Depends on your budget and what you want to get out of the tv. You could use an Rx 480 just for its HDR with movies, but that's low on the scale for gaming. Best option would be a gtx1080 sli. A gtx 1080 will get decent frames by itself, but in 4k you'll not be maxing many.

As to your 390x, it'll do HDR easily, amd cards could do it 10 years ago. The problem is the 4k part with a DP 1.2 on your board, when it really needs DP 1.3, or Hdmi 2.0 and you've got 1.4. That card really doesn't have the cajones for 4k @60Hz.

So. Budget. It's your only limiting factor. Nvidia would be the only realistic choice for 4k gaming.

From all the suppositions I've read, the Rx 490 will most probably land somewhere around the level between the 1070 and 1080, but closer to the 1070.

i did mainly want to change my card for movies and the hdmi 2.0 so i can watch 4k movies, downloads and discs on the pc, but if i had 4k Id like it for gaming as well, but im not so fussy with games as I am with movies. I was thinking my budget would be around £750 ($970)

the current 390x was fine on my asus 27" PB278Q 1440 monitor but now ive dragged my pc into the living room and plugged it in to the 65" tv it looks so much better and its changed everything making me want to upgrade but the 390x cost about 500 dollars 5 months ago so i want to make sure this time its future proof for a bit longer than 5 months lol

Hey I want a GPU to stream video 4k HDR @60hz to my TV, no gaming. Which GPU options do I have ? Do all GPUs with HDMI 2.0 output 4kHDR @ 60HZ ?
