Difference Between Deleting/Formatting a Partition and Letting Windows Wipe your Drive to Factory Settings?

I like to reinstall windows after around 6 months to keep my PC fresh and clean from viruses and useless programs and such. I use to use the built in feature windows has to completely wipe the drive to make it seem brand new again. The only problem with this is that it takes hours upon hours for this process to complete. I have been using a different way to wipe my drive of windows and all of my previous files but I don't know if there is any benefits to letting windows clear the drive or not. The way is to boot into a re-installation CD or normal windows CD, Navigate to the partitions part of the installation and delete/format the drive the has the OS on it (both the deleting and formatting options get the job done). I love this because it takes no time at all to wipe the drive clean and start reinstalling windows but I started to wonder if there is any harm in this or if the windows built in feature is just a better option. Thanks for those of who help!

Solution
The one to just delete your files just deletes the markers so you can still recover files if they are not overwritten. The option to wipe everything writes 0s to try preventing file recovering.

There's an option for that though, you can either let it refresh your files or completely clear the drive which includes wiping the OS.

What built in feature? There are a couple ways and options. There are differences in formatting methods. Some will write 0s, some will just wipe the partition table or other types of markers, some will scan for bad sectors after formatting.

There's an option to refresh your PC files and not have the OS be wiped but there is also another option that wipes everything including the OS. This option is for if someone is going to sell said drive or would just like to get a true fresh install of an OS.
