General Question About Windows XP

I have been experimenting with old laptops laying around lately. One thing that I happened to notice (accidentally) is that when I install a fresh copy of windows XP (Professional) with sp2 bootstrapped, then all drivers, and then install sp3 the laptops run quickly. However, whenever I download the 130 or so windows updates, the laptops never run quite as fast after the fact. For instance, Google Chrome surfs along like a charm before I install any of the myriad updates (except for sp3). Since these are not my primary laptops I can play around with it as much as I like. I am simply curious if anyone has any ideas, guesses, thoughts, on why the updates cause performance to degrade. Do all the security patches introduce more processes or perhaps something else? Frankly it's surfing the web where a loss of performance is noticeable. Despite the potential vulnerabilities, I'm thinking of leaving all those updates off of these machines because they run so much better without them.

Solution
you can check yourself by installing one update by another manually and have a look if it´s affecting performance or not. (restart between updates)
