I want a desktop to do school work and some light gaming. I'm wondering if any of these parts are overkill for this.

Search for another motherboard, like H* ones or B*. Z* series are overkill for your processor. 16GB for 'light' gaming seems to be overkill. After that, seems to be a reasonable build

I see everything fine, but i also suggerest you going for 2x4gb stick (2133 or higher, -note: its a waste for higher frecuency on your build-), will be perfect with the dual channel which gives you the motherboard.
