Need help identifying better grahpics cards by their series numbers.

So i am kinda new to the whole thing and when looking at the benchmarks and reviews i see that some for example the GTX 670 is higher than the 690 and to me that doesn't make sense because the 690 is newer right???
Another example is like the GTX 780 is way higher up than the GTX 950!!!!
Am i missing something, so newer doesn't not mean better?

I look at it like this

The first number is the generation number
the next two numbers are the performance level.

So a 950 is a newer generation than a 780, but it's not designed to be a high performer. The ''50"" indicates it's target market is people on a tight budget or with minimal performance needs. Whereas a 780 is an older generation but at the time of release it's target market is the high performance gamers.

The way that I look at GPUs is that for every increase in series, a card is approximately equivalent in power to the next level of the card from the previous generation. Example: the GTX 660 would be roughly equivalent to a GTX 750 in terms of performance. This is rarely exactly true, as newer GPUs likely support newer APIs (such as DirectX 12) and other factors such as VRAM and clock speed aren't being taken into account, but it gives you a general idea of performance comparisons between cards of different generations.

Also, any "x90" card (GTX 690 for example) are dual-GPU cards, meaning that there is more than one GPU on one card.
