I do in-home support for a local company in San Francisco. I've been to several homes, and have learned a lot about various networking setups along the way. Also, I've worked in support kinds of roles before, so I am familiar with a fair amount of tech.

I had a client earlier today. She has a large 3 bedroom apartment, and she gets very low signal is the bedrooms away from the router.

She has a fairly new xfinity cable router/modem. I didn't get the model #, but I think it's this one or one similar: http://tinyurl.com/jgobz6d. I ran speed tests near the unit, and got 50-60 Mbps. 100+ one time. In the back rooms, it varies, from 1 to 20 Mbps. Lots of other networks are active as well.

I saw a colleague use http://www.metageek.com/products/inssider, which I thought could help, but I see it's like $150, so I did not get it yet.

Since the modem has a router built in, I thought I could just get a wifi extender/booster that I could set it up wirelessly, without running a cable between it and the xfinity modem/router.

What is the best device to get to extend the wifi wirelessly (not connected to the xfinity router) to the far areas of her apartment, and can I get one without having to buy another router?

Also, does anyone know of good software like 'inssider', but is not expensive (under $20) or free?

Solution
Adding more RF into a congested environment will only make things worse! Wherever you can use a cable connection, be it to a host machine or to a WIFI access point/switch. This can be achieved by running new cable or powerline adapters.

Thank you. I talked to a few techs, some say just use a more powerful router, another suggests to use powerline extenders.

The powerline adapters are new to me. If there's a choice of getting one strong router vs a powerline adapter, which is the better choice?
