I was going to swap out CPU's from one computer to another, (Both Computers were Dell Optiplex Models) The Old CPU a Intel Core 2 Duo 6400 going to a Intel Core 2 Duo 7500. Obviously both are Intel and the use the same socket. So I thought this would be no problem. But I go to swap them out putting new thermal paste on it and screwing the heat sink back on to CPU. I try to boot the computer back up and all I get it the fan just going as hard as it can and nothing else. I go to place the original CPU back into the seat and place some more thermal paste on it and it boots right back up as intended. Was I doing something wrong here or Do you think that the CPU I was trying to swap it out with just bad?

Solution
Usually it works and if the BIOS supports it, it should work. If it doesnt it's probably dead

Unless you've got another 775 system you could try it on. To see if it is dead

I've never had to do that. Could you point me in the right direction so I could get that done?

Ok, I did that and there was a BIOS update. Did the update and such and tried swapping the CPU's again with the same results.

I think that may be the case as well. This is my first time trying anything with a CPU, but if you are technologically inclined then swapping processors is a relatively easy swap isn't it?

Thanks, that should be all the info I need for now.

You didn't say which Optiplex's you have. Some of the older ones don't support 32nm CPUs (they didn't exist yet). Optiplex 745 and older is 65nm only. Optiplex 755 and up to 780 should support both. The E6400 is 65nm, the E7500 is 32nm. But if it's supported then the newest BIOS should work for you. If you look up your chipset specs. it will tell you which families of CPUs it supports.

It was an optiplex 745. The CPU was not supported. I got a hold of some 760s which supported the CPU, so I'm good now.
